Top seed Alize Cornet failed to overcome an overnight deficit to Jennifer Brady in round one of the Guangzhou Open. Brady was leading 6-0, 2-1 against the Frenchwoman before poor weather brought an early end to proceedings on Monday. However, the reprieve failed to boost Cornet, who slipped to a 6-0, 6-3 defeat when play resumed.

Aleksandra Krunic (4) had no such trouble, though. The 2017 finalist overcame Viktorija Golubic 6-4, 6-3 in 95 minutes, while Zheng Saisai (8) was too good for Guo Hanyu in a 6-4, 6-2 triumph and Wang Qiang (3) hammered Nicole Gibbs 6-1, 6-2.

At the Korea Open, Agnieszka Radwanska began her tournament with a 6-4, 7-5 defeat of Bethanie Mattek-Sands. Alison Van Uytvanck (5) was sent packing in three sets by Ajla Tomljanovic and Magdalena Rybarikova (4) was forced to retire through injury when 6-3, 3-2 down to Mandy Minella, but fellow seeds Hsieh Su-wei and Irina-Camelia Begu went through.
