Serena Williams took outright ownership of the most grand-slam victories with a dominant 6-2, 6-3 victory over Yaroslava Shvedova to book her place in the US Open quarterfinals.
Williams, who is aiming to become a six-time champion at Flushing Meadows, surpassed Roger Federer with her 308th grand-slam victory against the overwhelmed Kazakh.
The seven-time champion needs to reach the final to have a chance of retaining her spot atop the world rankings, and appeared in no mood to surrender her place at the summit as she brushed aside her opponent in one hour and eight minutes.
She will now take on fifth seed Simona Halep in the next round following the Romanian's >straight-sets success over Carla Suarez Navarro.
Serving typically proved to be the difference for Williams, who lost just two points on her first serve and sent down 11 aces to Shvedova's three.
Shvedova was broken in her first service game, Williams striking for a 2-0 lead after seeing four break points go begging.
The World No. 52 never made an impression on the Williams serve and the 22-time grand slam champion wrapped up the set courtesy of one of Shvedova's 17 unforced errors, which handed her a second break.
Williams found somewhat sterner resistance from Shvedova in the second, but she made no mistake in grasping the only break point of the set to go 4-2 ahead.
And two games later victory was wrapped with a vicious serve that Shvedova could only meekly swat into the net.
