World number seven Maria Sharapova has not played since her exit from the Australian Open.

Maria Sharapova has pulled out of Indian Wells due to an ongoing problem with her left forearm.

The issue kept the world number seven out of the Qatar Open, and the Russian has not featured since her quarter-final defeat to Serena Williams at the Australian Open in January.

Sharapova's withdrawal means Mariana Duque-Marino enters the main draw of the WTA Premier event.

"I am extremely disappointed that I am unable to compete in this year’s BNP Paribas Open," said Sharapova. "I have been focused on healing my left forearm injury and tried to get my body to be 100 per cent ready to play this event, as it is one of my favourite events on the WTA and so close to my home in LA."

"I know the tournament will be a great success this year and I will be anxious to return next year and hopefully many years after."

Raymond Moore, CEO of the tournament, added: "We are disappointed that Maria is unable to play in this year’s BNP Paribas Open as she is a terrific competitor and a fan favourite in Indian Wells. We wish her a speedy recovery, and look forward to having her back next year."
