World number 17 Caroline Wozniacki cruised to an easy win over Christina McHale to move into the WTA ASB Classic quarter finals.
The Dane pulled of a straight-sets win over the number-64-ranked American, winning 6-0, 6-2, after McHale survived two match points to avoid the dreaded 'double bagel' scoreline. Wozniacki moved McHale around the court with ease to set up the win, despite a late fightback from the American.
The best viewing of the day came between England's Naomi Broady and Latvian Jelena Ostapenko. Broady, ranked 122 in the world defeated Ostapenko 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 in a near 150-minute thriller packed with drama.
Ostapenko threw her racquet in frustration at a ball she could not hit during a second-set point, hitting a ball boy in the process. Broady suggested her opponent should be disqualified, arguing with the umpire and then WTA supervisor Tony Cho.
Broady had to survive several match points after going 5-1 down in the third set, sealing the win by reeling off six consecutive games.
Austrian world number 122 Tamira Paszek defeated Russia's number 25 ranked Svetlana Kuznetsova in the biggest upset of the day, winning 6-2, 6-3, while Romania's Alexandra Dulgheru won 7-6, 6-3 against New Zealand local Marina Erakovic.
In the grandstand, American Sloane Stephens won the first match of the day, beating Carina Witthoeft 3-6, 6-1, 6-3, before Kirsten Phillips toppled Irina Falconi 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
World number 50 Julia Goerges played out a tight game against number 42 Barbora Strycova, winning 6-4 7-6, while on court two, Japan's Nao Hibino beat Russia's Daria Kasatkina 7-5, 2-6, 7-5.
