Vihari, Pujara and Shami shine; India settles for draw against New Zealand XI

Hello and welcome to Sportstar's LIVE coverage of  day two of the three-day practice match between India and New Zealand XI.  This is V.S. Aravind and I will take you through the day's play as action unfolds at Seddon Park, Hamilton.

 

So the practice match ends in a draw . Thank you for joining and we will be back for the first Test between India and New Zealand, starting from February 21. Till then, it's goodbye.

• After a failure in the first innings, Mayank Agarwal and Prithvi Shaw got some good batting practice in the middle and importantly it was Rishabh Pant who excelled with a half-century.
• Hanuma Vihari got a century and Cheteshwar Pujara too made a brilliant 93 under pressure.
• Among the bowlers, Mohammed Shami was the pick of the bowlers, with Jasprit Bumrah, Navdeep Saini, Umesh Yadav among the wickets. R Ashwin managed just one wicket.   
• And the players shake hands. The three-day practice match ends in a Draw.
• Wriddhiman Saha and R Ashwin get some good batting practice.
• Rishabh Pant departs for a well-made 70 off 65 deliveries.
• Mayank Agarwal retires out on 81.
• This has been a fine knock from Rishabh Pant and he is batting on 46.
• Mayank Agarwal is approaching his cnetury and he is unbeaten on 81.
• The 100-run partnership between Mayank and Prithvi is up. It has come at a fair clip as the duo bring it up in just 112 balls.

• Mayank Agarwal brings up his half-century off 56 deliveries. Finally a fifty from an India opener.  Surprise, surprise! Rishabh Pant walks into the middle. India 96/2

• WICKET- Daryl Mitchell at it once again and this time he removes Shubman Gill. Both the openers failing to make an impact.
• WICKET - Daryl Mitchell removes Prithvi Shaw for 39 and the young opener fails to convert his starts into a big one once again.
• Going to be a real test for the openers. They have given a good start but getting runs under the belt is crucial.

Report, Day Two

Jasprit Bumrah and  Mohammed Shami  gave an exhibition of high-quality fast bowling on day two of India’s warm-up encounter against New Zealand XI, sending a warning signal for the home team ahead of first Test in Wellington.

For the record, New Zealand was bowled out for 235 in 74.2 overs but Bumrah (2/18 in 11 overs) and Shami (3/17 in 10 overs) used the conditions well and in the process added miles to their legs ahead of the two World Test Championship games.

Umesh Yadav  (2/49 in 13 overs) and  Navdeep Saini  (2/58 in 15 overs) bowled more overs but weren’t half as good as the two premier pacers who troubled the batsmen in all their spells.

Mohammed Shami was the pick of the bowlers with three wickets.

 

With the pitch easing out,  Prithvi Shaw  (29 batting off 19 balls) unleashed a series of cover drives including a six off a ramp shot while  Mayank Agarwal  (23 batting off 17 balls) got a maximum with a Nataraja Shot to finish the day at 53 for no loss.

India vs New Zealand XI Warm-up: Shami, Bumrah, Umesh shine as India takes lead

For head coach Ravi Shastri, the basic idea was to check out how his pacers got into the groove and Bumrah and Shami hit the straps straightaway in overcast conditions.

While Umesh and Saini in their first spells bowled too full, Bumrah pitched deliveries on back of length generating disconcerting bounce. He bowled in three short spells while Shami bowled two spells.
