Australia quick Mitchell Starc could be doubtful for the third Test against South Africa at Newlands starting on Thursday. The left-arm speedster didn’t bowl at the nets on Monday due to a calf complaint.

Starc stood out in the first Test at Durban leading Australia to victory with his thunderous figures — 5/34 and 4/75. It was a comeback of sorts for the 28-year-old as he missed the Boxing Day Test in the Ashes due to a foot injury.

The Aussies would have had an advantage going into the third Test with Starc and without Rabada, but at the moment, there is no clarity.

If Starc misses out, Jhye Richardson or Chadd Sayers could be in line for a debut. Morne Morkel is the automatic choice if Rabada stays suspended.

All-rounder Mitchell Marsh has resumed bowling after nursing a groin strain.
