IPL 2019 highlights, MI vs SRH: Mumbai Indians secures playoff spot with super-over victory

Jasprit Bumrah conceded just eight runs in the super over and Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard knocked off the runs off just three balls, to secure two vital points for Mumbai Indians.

Both evenly matched teams would look to seal a playoff berth when they clash on Thursday.

Mumbai Indians moved up to second place on the IPL 2019 points table with a super-over victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Wankhede Stadium.

Manish Pandey holds the key here, though he needs Mohammad Nabi, in particular, to at least hang around for the next two-three overs. Mumbai Indians has two overs of Jasprit Bumrah and two overs of Lasith Malinga, who's back in the attack, up its sleeve.

◘ Five runs off the tenth over and at the halfway mark in its innings, Sunrisers Hyderabad is 80 for three, needs a further 83 runs. Manish Pandey and Vijay Shankar content to pick singles and wait for the loose delivery. Krunal Pandya and Rahul Chahar have put the brakes on the scoring.

◘ End of the ninth over and Sunrisers Hyderabad is 75 for three, needing a further 88 runs off 66 balls. Vijay Shankar and Manish Pandey look to steady the innings for the visitor. Krunal Pandya continues from the other end.

◘ End of the seventh over and Sunrisers Hyderabad is 65 for two. It needs 98 more runs from 78 balls. Manish Pandey is in excellent touch. He has raced off to 21 runs off 10 balls and holds the key to this match. Kane Williamson is happy to knock the ball around and pick the singles on offer.

◘ End of the sixth over and Sunrisers Hyderabad is 59 for two. Manish Pandey is batting on 16 off five balls, with captain Kane Williamson joining him. The visitor needs a further 104 runs from 84 balls. Sunrisers is well in control of the chase, Mumbai Indians has taken the option of strategic timeout immediately when it became available. Rahul Chahar is into the attack.

◘ WICKET! Martin Guptill is trapped in front of the wicket by Jasprit Bumrah. Bumrah's natural angle doing the trick on this occasion: the ball came in with the angle and struck Guptill on the knee roll of his front pad. Umpire Nandan took his time to make the decision, but he made the right one. Guptill and Manish Pandey thought the ball might go over the stumps and reviewed the decision, but the ball-tracker shows the ball was clattering into the stumps. Three reds and the on-field umpire's decision stands. Sunrisers Hyderabad 57 for two in 5.1 overs.

◘ End of the fifth over, which yields Sunrisers Hyderabad 17 runs. It is 57 for one with Manish Pandey announcing his arrival with a couple of fours and a six off Lasith Malinga. Jasprit Bumrah continues from the other end.

◘ WICKET! End of the fourth over and Sunrisers Hyderabad is 40 for one. Wriddhiman Saha picks out Evin Lewis at point, hitting a slower delivery from Jasprit Bumrah uppishly. The wcketkeeper-batsman had hit Bumrah for a couple of fours and was timing the ball crisply. He falls for 15-ball 25. A good catch from Lewis! Manish Pandey is the new batsman in.

◘ End of the third over and Sunrisers Hyderabad is 30 for no loss. Wriddhiman Saha and Martin Guptill went after Barinder Sran this over, collecting 17 runs. Saha cut and flat-batted the left-arm seamer for a couple of fours before Guptill lifted him over mid-off for a six. Jasprit Bumrah is into the attack and Mumbai Indians is desperate for a breakthrough.

 

◘ End of the second over and Sunrisers Hyderabad is 13 for no loss. Lasith Malinga gave width to Martin Guptill on the third ball of the over and the New Zealand batsman took full toll by finding the boundary for a four.  Barinder Sran continues from the other end.

◘ End of the first over and Sunrisers Hyderabad is 7 for no loss. Wriddhiman Saha opened his and the team's account with a four past point off the first ball of the innings, but Bairnder Sran pulled his length back in the subsequent balls and conceded only three runs off the final five deliveries. Lasith Malinga shares the new ball with Sran from the other end.

◘ Barinder Sran to open the bowling for Mumbai Indians. Martin Guptill and Wriddhiman Saha, who's on strike, are the openers for Sunrisers Hyderabad.

◘ WICKET! Bhuvneshwar Kumar removes Hardik Pandya with a lifter that Hardik Pandya can't resist going after. He tries to flatbat the ball over mid-off but miscues it and the fielder takes a comfortable catch. Pandya is out for 18 off 10 balls. Mumbai Indians is 119 for four. Kieron Pollard is the new batsman in.

 

◘ End of the 15th over and Mumbai Indians is 113 for three. Rashid Khan is proving difficult to score off. The home team has given itself a good launchpad to post a score in the region of 170. Bhuvneshwar Kumar is back into the attack.

Hardik Pandya is the new batsman in for the home team, which needs a shift in momentum quickly. Basil Thampi is back into the attack.

◘ WICKET! Evin Lewis is out for 1, holing out to deep midwicket, trying to sweep Mohammad Nabi. The wicket followed a sequence of three dot deliveries. Mumbai Indians is 91 for three. Hardik Pandya is the new batsman in.

Quinton de Kock swatted away Khaleel Ahmed's first ball of the over for a six over deep midwicket, but Khaleel removed Suryakumar Yadav off the fourth ball of the over. Evin Lewis has walked in and Mumbai Indians' innings is struggling for momentum. Mohammad Nabi is back in the attack for his final over.

◘ End of the 11th over and Mumbai Indians is 81 for one. Rashid Khan has been difficult to get away in the two overs he's bowled so far. Onus on one of Suryakumar Yadav or Quinton de Kock to shift gears and up the ante. Khaleel Ahmed is back into the attack, replaces Basil Thampi.

◘ End of the 10th over and Mumbai Indians is 76 for one. Basil Thampi has stymied Quinton de Kock, in particular, and Suryakumar Yadav with excellent variations in length and pace. He has found the blockhole at will and when he has bowled back a length, the Mumbai batsmen have had difficulty in manoeuvring the ball.  Rashid Khan is back into the attack.

◘ End of the ninth over and at the first strategic timeout, Mumbai Indians is 69 for one. Suryakumar Yadav is in very good touch tonight! He opened the 6s account for Mumbai Indians with a wristy flick off Mohammad Nabi, who went for only nine runs despite that boundary. Quinton de Kock is struggling with timing, he's batting on 21 off 23 balls, while Suryakumar has raced to 22 off 13 balls.

◘ Seven runs off the eighth over and Mumbai Indians is 60 for one. Mumbai Indians is doing well to find the boundary once every over, but Sunrisers Hyderabad will be happy with the way the innings has panned out so far.

◘ End of the seventh over and Mumbai Indians is 53 for one. Suryakumar Yadav has made a positive start, finding the boundary thrice and kept the scoreboard ticking over. Basil Thampi is into the attack for Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Just nine runs came off the final two overs with Sunrisers Hyderabad also buying the wicket of Rohit Sharma through Khaleel Ahmed. This match is in the balance now. ◘ WICKET! Rohit Sharma is out for 24 off 18 balls. A well-directed short delivery from Khaleel Ahmed, into the body of the Mumbai Indians captain, who tried to heave the ball over the infield on the onside. The ball hit the splice of the bat and ballooned up in the air for a simple catch to mid-on. Sunrisers Hyderabad gets the breakthrough it was yearning for. Suryakumar Yadav is the new batsman in for Mumbai Indians.

 

◘ End of the fifth over and Mumbai Indians is 36 for no loss. Rashid Khan's first over yields only one run for Mumbai Indians. Pace off the ball might be the way to go on this pitch. Kane Williamson has already used four bowlers in search of a wicket. Now, Khaleel Ahmed is back into the attack for his second over.

◘ End of the fourth over and Mumbai Indians is 35 for no loss. Bhuvneshwar Kumar goes for nine runs off his second over. A couple of balls on Quinton de Kock's pads and the South African clipped them for fours behind square on the onside. Early signs are that the pitch is excellent for batting and the bowlers have to work hard to stymie the batsmen and pick wickets. Rashid Khan has been introduced into the attack.

◘ End of the third over and Mumbai Indians is 26 for no loss. Just four singles came off the over, bowled by Mohammad Nabi. Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock were content knocking the ball around for singles. Bhuvneshwar Kumar has switched ends and is now bowling from the end Khaleel Ahmed began.

◘  End of the second over and Mumbai Indians is 22 for no loss. Rohit Sharma found the boundary three times in the over off Khaleel Ahmed. His confident start will settle the nerves in the Mumbai dug out.  A bowling change in the third over for Sunrisers Hyderabad: Mohammad Nabi has replaced Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

◘  End of the first over and Mumbai Indians is 9 for no loss. Rohit Sharma opened his account with a slash outside off stump, which fetched him four runs thanks to a misfield from Basil Thampi at third man. He then creamed Bhuvneshwar Kumar through point for his second four. Not much movement for the UP seamer in the first over, he was mostly stump to stump and Rohit was happy to defend. Khaleel Ahmed to bowl from the other end.

◘ The teams are out and Bhuvneshwar Kumar will bowl the first over. An unchanged opening combination for Mumbai Indians, with captain Rohit Sharma partnering Quinton de Kock. Kane Williamson has two men in the cordon for his pace spearhead.

◘ Martin Guptill to play his first match of IPL 2019 tonight. He faces his former team in Mumbai Indians, which will be batting first. A total between 160 and 180 is what the home team will aim for. Basil Thampi, a bowler who bowls back of a length predominantly, has replaced Sandeep Sharma in Sunrisers Hyderabad's playing XI and, if he hits the right line and length, will enjoy bowling on the Wankhede pitch, which has time and again proved to be the quickest in the country. The average total batting first at the venue this season has been 188 in five matches, three of which have been won by teams batting first.

Remember, Mumbai Indians, which has 14 points from 12 fixtures, can become the third team to qualify for the IPL 2019 playoffs with a win, while Sunrisers Hyderabad, with 12 points from 12 matches, will move a step closer as well if it wins tonight. Its net run rate of +0.70 is comfortably above every team in the league. An SRH win will also knock Rajasthan Royals, which can achieve a maximum of 13 points, out of the competition.

◘ Sunrisers Hyderabad team management has an important selection call to make. It must choose whether Martin Guptill or Billy Stanlake replaces David Warner, who has joined Australia's World Cup preparatory camp in Brisbane. His replacement has big boots to fill and it could have a bearing on tonight's match.

MI vs SRH PREVIEW

It’s a do-or-die battle for Sunrisers Hyderabad. The Kane Williamson-led side, which reached the final of the Indian Premier League (IPL) last year, stands in a tricky situation this time around, with 12 points from as many games.

And it desperately requires a win against Mumbai Indians on Thursday to stay in contention for a playoff berth.

With Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Capitals having already reached the playoffs, the contest for the next two slots have spiced up. Mumbai Indians has 14 points and a win here will help the side become the third team to reach the last-four stage, while Sunrisers too needs a victory to keep its hopes alive.

But coming into the fixture, Sunrisers is without its star opener, David Warner, who has flown back to Australia to join the camp for the World Cup. Warner had a terrific outing -- amassing 692 runs from 12 matches -- and his absence could impact the team’s chances. However, with a strong batting line-up starring captain Williamson, Manish Pandey, all-rounder Vijay Shankar, the visiting team look quite strong, at least on paper. And to add to it, Wriddhiman Saha returning to form is another boost.

With a perfect mix of pace and spin, bowling department has always been an area of strength for Sunrisers. Even as its spinner, Rashid Khan, is in red hot form, but on Thursday, a lot would depend on how its pacers -- Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Khaleel Ahmed fare.

Mumbai Indians hasn’t had a remarkable outing at home. It has won three of its five outings at the Wankhede and it will be a challenge for the side to tackle Sunrisers.

The home team looks well settled with South African Quinton de Kock -- 393 from 12 matches -- and captain Rohit Sharma -- 307 runs from 11 games -- at the top.

The middle-order is taken care of by hard hitters Hardik Pandya and Kieron Pollard, who have been in good touch. But for the home team, it is important that Surya Kumar Yadav and Krunal Pandya convert the starts into bigger scores.

In the bowling department, Mumbai will miss left-arm Australian pacer Jason Behrendroff, who has also headed home to join the World Cup camp. But with Jasprit Bumrah, Lasith Malinga and Hardik around, the pace department looks formidable.

Both the teams hope to play some smart cricket, but they are aware that one slip-up here could dash their dreams!
