The 21st edition of the FIFA World Cup from June 14 to July 15, will be played in 12 venues spread across 11 cities of Russia.

From the inaugural World Cup in 1930, football's showcase event has grown in size and global reach. The tournament was not held in 1942 and 1946 because of the Second World War.

World Cup 2018: Full Coverage

The past 20 editions have seen 77 nations participate. Iceland and Panama are the debutants in this World Cup. Five-time winner Brazil has played in all editions, while Germany and Italy have lifted the trophy four times each. Argentina and Uruguay have lifted the trophy twice. The 2018 edition will see 32 countries competing for glory.

FIFA World Cup: 40 fun facts

This will be the first World Cup held in Europe after Germany hosted the event in 2006.
