After a loss against Bengaluru, Shillong Lajong needed to secure a win against Salgaocar

A goal from Fabio on the 48th minute was enough to secure a much needed win for Shillong Lajong FC against Goan side Salgaocar FC, on Thursday at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Shillong.

Coach Thangboi Singto made two changes to the side that lost to Bengaluru FC. Samuel Shadap and Yusuke Yamagata replaced Tamang and Pritam Singh in the starting line-up.

Salgaocar also made made significant changes — defenders Augustin Fernandes, Keenan Almeida and striker Calvin Mbarga making way for Reagan Singh, Nicolau Colaco and Saran Singh.

The away side started brightly, with wingers Jackichand Singh and Seityasen Singh running riots on the flanks. A cross from the former was headed just wide by Seityasen in the opening minutes of the encounter.

English striker Darryl Duffy also had a great opportunity to secure an early lead for the away side, but mistimed his shot.

The hosts gradually grew into that game and on the 28th minute, goalkeeper Karanjith Singh had to produce a fine save to prevent a Uiliams free-kick from going in. But the scores remained level on half-time.

The home team came out with a bang after half-time and a free-kick, three minutes into the half, found Fabio, who slotted the ball in comfortably to give Lajong the lead.

But the visitors continued to play with an attacking mindset and Jackichand almost produced a perfect pass in the 57th minute to unlock the defence. But striker Duffy could not make it in time.

Gilbert Oliveira's shot hit the frame of the goal on the 70th minute but rebounded off harmlessly, as the hosts coninuted to attack the home defence.

This opened up more opportunities for Lajong to counter attack, with both Bipin Singh and Penn Oriji missing out chances in the dying minutes, to wrap the game up for the home side.
