World Archery: Indian women's compound team settles for silver

Indian women's team settled for silver after losing to Colombia in the compound team final at the 2017 World Archery Championships in Mexico City on Saturday.

Indian women's team settled for silver after losing to Colombia in the compound team final at the 2017 World Archery Championships in Mexico City on Saturday.

India, which has never won a gold at the senior Championships, went into the final as the favourite, boasting of the highest per-match average of any team in the field in Mexico.

But the team comprising Lily Chanu Paonam, Jyothi Surekha Vennam and Trisha Deb fell short against Colombia's Sara Lopez, Alejandra Usquiano and Nora Valdez in the final.

The Colombian team was in top form, landing just six arrows out of the 10-point ring. It won the first set 58-55 and never let go of its lead till the end. After a four-set battle, Colombia emerged a 234-228 winner.

“I think our hearts are going to jump of our bodies,” said Colombia's Alejandra. “It’s a huge happiness to give our country this new medal, a world medal and in such a beautiful country.” It was Colombia's second gold medal.
