Javelin thrower Shivpal Singh was far away from his personal best but still managed a decent 80.87m effort in his Diamond League debut at the Bislett Games in Oslo in Norway on Thursday.

The 23-year-old from Uttar Pradesh, who won the Asian championships silver with a personal best of 86.23m in Doha in April, had three throws above 80m and finished eighth in a field that had some of the world’s best throwers.

This being early season, many of the top stars appeared rusty.

World champion Johannes Vetter of Germany, who has a personal best of 94.44m, won the gold with 85.27m but Andreas Hofmann, the World No. 1, could only manage a fourth place with  82.92 and Olympic champion Thomas Rohler was sixth with 82.63.

Estonia’s Magnus Kirt (84.74) and Taipei’s Chao-Tsun Cheng (84.30), the Asian record holder and Asian champion, took the silver and bronze.
