World Boxing C'ships: Anamika, Shiksha and Jaismine progress to pre-quarterfinals

Anamika (50kg), Shiksha (54kg) and Jaismine Lamboria (60kg) gave impressive performances to advance to the pre-quarterfinals at the World women’s boxing championships at Istanbul on Thursday.

Three more Indian boxers, Anamika (50kg), Shiksha (54kg) and Jaismine Lamboria (60kg), gave impressive performances to advance to the pre-quarterfinals at the World women’s boxing championships at Istanbul on Thursday.

World youth silver medallist Anamika outpunched Romanian Eugenia Anghel 5-0.

Anamika began watchfully, resorting to effective counterattacks as Eugenia landed some head shots. The Indian executed her straight punches and uppercuts to take the first round.

The 21-year-old Indian moved around well as she displayed her jabs and combinations to dominate the second round. She relied on her counter-punching in the final round to record a fine victory.

Anamika will meet Australian Worlds bronze medallist Kristy Harris.

Herrera and posted a 5-0 victory.

The 25-year-old used her counterattacks, including some well-directed jabs and right hooks, to stay marginally ahead of an attacking Milagros.

As Milagros showed more aggression, Shiksha did well to step back and launch her counters in the second round. The Indian kept danger at bay in the final round to set up a clash with Mongolian Oyuntsetseg Yesugen.

Another Asian bronze medallist, Jaismine secured a 4-1 verdict against Youth Olympics silver medallist Porntip Buapa of Thailand.

Southpaw Jaismine, a lanky counter-puncher, used her smooth movement and long hands to steal points. Even as the Thai looked to score through her quick hands, 20-year-old Jaismine mixed her attacks with counter moves and maintained a good control over the fight.

The results (Indians unless specified): Preliminary rounds: 50kg: Anamika bt Eugenia Anghel (Rou) 5-0; 54kg: Shiksha bt Milagros Herrera (Arg) 5-0; 60kg: Jaismine Lamboria bt Porntip Buapa (Tha) 4-1. On Wednesday: 75kg: Saweety Boora lost to Kerry Davis (Eng) 3-2.
