Chris Gayle failed to fire as he could only muster 36 off 41 balls, as Liam Plunkett sent him on his way.
England found an unlikely hero with the ball in Joe Root when he sent Shimron Hetmyer and Jason Holder on their way in quick succession to trigger a collapse for West Indies.
Nicholas Pooran top scored for West Indies with 63 (78 balls, 3x4, 1x6) but once he was dismissed with the score at 212, it was downhill for West Indies as it lost its last four wickets for just 10 runs.
Jofra Archer, the toast of the fans, picked up three wickets for 30 runs in his nine overs. He accounted for the dangerman Nicholas Pooran, Carlos Brathwaite and Sheldon Cottrel.
Mark Wood took three wickets for just 18 runs in 6.4 overs as the West Indies batsman failed to decode him, as expected. Wood had a good outing when England toured West Indies before the World Cup as the Windies were troubled by his pace and variety.
Opening the batting for England in place of Jason Roy, Joe Root scored an unbeaten 94-ball hundred to guide his team to an eight-wicket win. Root shared a 95-run partnership for the first wicket with Jonny Bairstow and a 104-run partnership with Chris Woakes for the second wicket. This is Root's second hundred at this World Cup and he now has three overall at the quadrennial tournament.
