South Africa batsman AB de Villiers has retired from international cricket effective immediately.

De Villiers has played 114 Tests, 228 one-day internationals and 78 Twenty20s for the Proteas, and has been one of the pioneers of modern batsmanship.

 

De Villiers' ability to play shots all across the field has often left fans gobsmacked. The 34-year-old has been equally electric on the field, pulling off catches that - at times - were a bespoke celebration of his agility and athleticism.

In a career spanning close to 14 years, De Villiers has 66 overs of medium pace (34 in Tests and 32 in ODIs) in international cricket with nine wickets against his name - two in Tests and seven in ODIs.

Darren Powell and Tino Best of West Indies were his only Test scalps.
