The objectives of league include bringing an international-quality cricket competition for women and providing exposure and platform for women's cricket in India.

Trying to cash in on the popularity of cricket and promote the game among women, the formation of a Women’s Cricket League was announced here on Thursday.

Conceptualised on the lines of the Australian Big Bash League and the Super League in England, the WCL would be formally launched on March 8, coinciding with International Women’s Day.

The objectives of league include bringing an international-quality cricket competition for women and providing exposure and platform for women's cricket in India. Whether it would be backed by the BCCI is, however, not known yet.

“It’s been more than three decades since the Indian women's cricket team was formed and won globally but there hardly any acknowledgement compared to the men in India. I am glad that a start has been made and we hope to see a lot of talent coming to the forefront,” Dronacharya awardee coach Sunita Sharma said.
