Eighteen-year-old Pawan Shah smashed 282, the second-highest individual score in U-19 internationals, as India U-19s posted 613 for eight against the Sri Lankans on Day Two of the final ‘Youth Test’ in Hambantota on Wednesday. Shah’s 332-ball effort included a six and 33 fours, six of which were scored in a single over.

That eventful over from left-arm seamer Vichithra Perera — the 108th of the innings — also allowed him to get to his double-century, off the first ball. Shah added 263 runs for the second wicket with left-hand opener Atharva Taide (177) and another 167 runs with Nikhil Wadhera (64).

Rare feat

The last time six boundaries were hit in an over in any form of international representative cricket was in 1982 in Manchester — Sandeep Patil the batsman, and Bob Willis the bowler. However, Willis had bowled seven balls in that particular over, including a no-ball.

Shah’s 282 was 22 short of the highest individual score in U-19 internationals. Australia’s Clinton Peake had scored an unbeaten 304 against the Indians in Melbourne in 1995.

In reply, Sri Lanka was 140 for 4 at stumps, with India’s left-arm seamer Mohit Jangra having picked three for 43.
