The Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) on Wednesday felicitated Veda Krishnamurthy and Rajeshwari Gayakwad for their exploits at the recent ICC Women's World Cup. The two were presented a cheque for Rs.5 lakh each, before a gathering of a number of former women cricketers from the State.

"I'm very happy that I have been recognised as a daughter of Karnataka even though I have been representing Railways for the last two years," said Veda.

Rajeshwari, too, thanked the KSCA for its role in her career. "I came here from Bijapur (now Vijayapura); I was taken care of very well by my coaches and former cricketers," she said. "Whenever I wanted to practise, the KSCA arranged a net for me."

The KSCA, meanwhile, promised to do more for women's cricket. "We'll try to make it more vibrant. We will try and get more girls to participate," said Sanjay Desai, the president.

"We treat women's cricketers on par with the men," noted R. Sudhakar Rao, secretary. "They travel by air, stay in the same type of hotels, and get all similar facilities. I'm sure that a lot of girls will come forward hereafter and take the sport up seriously."
