Despite struggling with cramps, Amelia Kerr put on a show with the ball, taking out South Africa’s best hope Laura Wolvaardt and Anneke Bosch in an over. These wickets brought her total to 14, making her the leading wicket-taker in a single edition of the Women’s World Cup. She bettered her tally with Annerie Dercksen’s wicket in the death.
In reply, skipper Laura Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits got South Africa off to an excellent start as they smashed 50 runs in 6.4 overs. The pair became the first to score 300-plus runs in two editions of the World Cup. They had scored 316 in the last edition.

The South Africa bowlers did well to contain New Zealand in the middle overs. Skipper Sophie Devine’s wicket only added to the woes. The Kiwis went without hitting a single boundary for 48 deliveries between the sixth and 14th over.
