Euro Injury XI

1 / 12

Our pick of eleven stars who will miss EURO 2016 owing to injuries.
Jack Butland (GK): Butland had a phenomenal season with Stoke before he broke his ankle while playing for England. He is likely to be the next England number one after Joe Hart.
Dani Carvajal (RB): The Real Madrid right back injured his hip in the Champions league final, otherwise he would have been a sure starter for Spain in France.
Vincent Kompany (CB): Manchester City captain will be a big miss for Belgium at the tournament. The skipper would have provided the team with much needed experience in the back four.
Raphael Varane (CB): The big young centre back was ruled out with a hamstring injury. He was a regular starter for Les Bleus and had formed a solid partnership with Laurent Koscielny.
Luke Shaw (LB): Twenty-year-old left back was having a good season for United until he broke his leg against PSV. But his recovery has been quicker than expected and he has already returned to training.
Claudio Marchisio (CM): Marchisio ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament while playing for Juventus and will be a big miss for Italy in the centre of midfield.
Ilkay Gundogan (CM): Injury-prone German midfielder recently completed his transfer from Dortmund to Manchester City. But a dislocated knee cap means he won’t be fit till September.
Marco Verratti (CM): Another big blow for Italy in the midfield, Verratti had just returned from a groin injury in April but it seems he never fully recovered. He is set to undergo a surgery in Qatar which will rule him out for two months.
Marco Reus (LF): The Dortmund forward has been rather unlucky with injury ruling him out of the World Cup as well as the Euros. He will be a big miss for Germany in the tournament.
Alessio Cerci (RF): Italian winger had a decent season for Genoa, on loan from Atletico Madrid. He suffered cartilage damage and will be requiring a knee surgery, ruling him out of contention for the Euros.
Danny Welbeck CF): Welbeck would have been a likely starter for Roy Hodgson in the tournament and could have even played the role of a super sub for the team.
