Subroto Cup: Army Boys, Bokaro boys in final

Army Boys bounced back from a one-goal deficit with a three-goal blitz in the space of 13 minutes.

St. Columbus Collegiate School (Bokaro) and Army Boys Sports Company scored identical 3-1 victories in the semifinals to set up Tuesday’s title-clash of the Subroto Cup (under-17) football tournament at the Ambedkar Stadium here.

Mizoram’s Government Bazar High School.

Army Boys bounced back from a one-goal deficit with a three-goal blitz in the space of 13 minutes. After the Mizo boys surged ahead in the 13th minute following a goal from Lalrintluanga, the Army boys equalised through Tony Hyidorm in the 22nd minute. P. L. Singh scored twice in succession in the closing moments of the first half to set up what turned out to be the winning margin, following a goalless second half.

The other semifinal, too, saw the teams on level terms at 1-1 at one stage. St. Columbus scored through P. Lalampana in the 15th minute and the Tripura boys rallied through substitute Bikan Chakma in the 34th minute.

However, it did not take long for the Jharkhand boys to settle the issue with two goals in the second session. Sandeep Kachhap and W. Johnson Singh scored in the space of three minutes to ensure the team’s passage to the final was never again threatened.

Johnson Singh 43’) beat Mungaibari Higher Secondary School, Mungiakami, Telamura, Khowai, Tripura 1 (Bikan Chakma 34’); Army Boys Sports Company 3 (Tony Hyidrom 22’, P. L. Singh 34’and 35’) beat Government Bazar High School, Mizoram 1 (Lalrintluanga 13’).
