Moudgil, Chandela secure Olympic quotas at World Ch’ship

Anjum Moudgil and Apurvi Chandela became the first set of Indian shooters to secure places for the 2020 Olympics by winning a silver and finishing fourth respectively.

Anjum Moudgil won a silver medal and Apurvi Chandela came fourth in the 52nd World Shooting Championship in Korea, securing two Olympic quota places in women’s air rifle. Anjum became only the second Indian woman shooter to win a World Championship medal after Tejaswini Sawant's rifle prone gold in 2010. The 24-year-old, who specialises in rifle 3-position event and has a qualification world record of 1180 out of 1200, said some technical adjustments she had made had paid off.

Anjum had qualified for the final in fourth place with an impressive total of 628.7. Combined with Apurvi’s 627.5 and the 48th placed Mehuli Ghosh’s 622.8, the Indian team bagged the silver medal, behind Korea which shot a world record 1886.2.

In men’s air rifle, Asian Games silver medallist Deepak Kumar made the final with 630.1. In the final, he finished sixth, narrowly missing the Olympic quota.

The top five had two Chinese, and one of them, the fifth placed Yang Haoran, had already won the Olympic quota in mixed air rifle. The other four won Olympic quotas.

While Manavjit Singh Sandhu (119) missed the men’s trap final by three points, Manisha Keer did well to bag the junior women’s silver, only narrowly missing out on gold. She lost the shoot-off for gold 0-1 after being tied on Junior World Record equalling 41 out of 50 with Italian Erica Sessa. India was joint first with China on the medals table, winning two gold, three silver and one bronze medal after two days of competition.
