Apurvi Chandela shoots gold in Meyton Cup

Indian shooter Apurvi Chandela put up a fine performance to clinch a gold and a bronze medal in the women's air rifle event at the Meyton Cup held in Austria.

Olympian Apurvi Chandela produced a brilliant display to win a gold and a bronze medal in women’s air rifle in the Meyton Cup international shooting championship in Innsbruck, Austria. Apurvi won the first competition with a total of 252.2, as she beat qualification topper Aneta Brabcova (630.6) of the Czech Republic by 0.6 point.  Interestingly, the scores of the both the shooters on the last two shots were identical at 10.5 and 10.7. Apurvi’s earlier lead of 0.6 came handy after the Czech had reduced the gap from 1.3. World University champion Vinita Bhardwaj won bronze with 230.1 as she missed a silver by 0.3 point.

Anjum Moudgil, who won the Olympic quota place in style with the World Championship silver last year, finished seventh after qualifying in the fifth place with 628.8. She shot 627.6 in another match and missed the final by 0.2 point. Apurvi was in fine form in the second competition, as she qualified with a total of 630.3, but had to settle with the bronze medal. Vinita was the only other Indian shooter to make the final. In men’s air rifle, Akhil Sheoran shot 624.6 and missed the final by 0.8 point. In men’s air pistol, Sumedh Kumar Devlalivala shot 562 and 561 in the two competitions, but eventually placed fifth on both the days, with scores of 175.9 and 175.8.
