This World Cup, Bangladesh’s Shakib Al Hasan with 606 runs and 11 wickets became the first to do so. The closest anyone else has come to achieving this feat is New Zealand’s Scott Styris, who in the 2007 edition in the Caribbean made 499 runs and claimed nine wickets, missing the all-rounder’s double of 400 runs and 10 wickets by one run and one wicket. Overall, only five players have managed to score 300-plus runs and claim 10-plus wickets.

Queries CornerHow many bowlers have claimed both the openers in the opening over of a World Cup match? - S. Kartik, Vellore. So far in World Cup cricket, only three bowlers have that distinction.
How often have two batsmen at Nos. 9 and 10 managed to score 50-plus runs in the same innings in a World Cup match? - Aditya Prakash Tripathi, Kanpur. Two batsmen batting at Nos. 9 and 10 have never made 50-plus scores in the same innings in a World Cup match. However, this has occurred once in ODI cricket, when India’s Jai Prakash Yadav batting at No. 9 made 69 and Irfan Pathan at 10 made 50 against New Zealand at Bulawayo in a tri-series tournament on August 26, 2005. The pair came in to bat when India was 44 for eight in the 14th over and added 118 runs for the ninth wicket, which was then the second-highest ninth wicket stand in all ODI cricket! In the recent World Cup match against Pakistan, Bangladesh’s Mustafizur Rahman claimed a five-wicket haul but conceded 75 runs. Is this the most conceded by a bowler with a five-wicket haul? - S. Rajan, Nagpur. Yes. Previously, England’s Steve Finn had claimed five for 71 against Australia in Melbourne at the 2015 World Cup. However, in all ODI cricket, England’s Adil Rashid claimed five for 85 runs against the West Indies at Queen’s Park in Grenada on February 27 this year. Mustafizur’s 75 is now the second most runs after Rashid. |
