Queries Corner

Which batsman has scored the maximum ODI centuries without having a score in the 90s?

Shiv Raman, Chennai

That distinction goes to Sri Lankan Upul Tharanga, who has 15 ODI centuries to his credit without a single score in the 90s. His highest without making a three-figure score in ODIs is the unbeaten 86 he made against Australia in Sydney on November 5, 2010, when he was unlucky to miss out on a hundred because rain interrupted Sri Lanka’s innings.

Recently, Himachal Pradesh’s Prashant Chopra scored a triple century on his birthday. Is this a first in the Ranji Trophy?

— Rahul Badhani, Jaipur

Prashant Chopra, who became the first Himachal Pradesh batsman to score a triple century (338 against Punjab in Dharamsala) on October 7, did so on his 25th birthday. He, thus, became only the second batsman in Ranji Trophy history after Raman Lamba to achieve this rare landmark. Lamba scored his triple century (312) on his 35th birthday for Delhi against Himachal Pradesh at the Feroz Shah Kotla, on January 2, 1995.

Have there been any instances of a side losing a Test match after not enforcing the follow-on when they had the chance to do so?

— Nitin Sapru, Mumbai

It has happened only once, at Kingsmead, Durban, in January 1950. South Africa, after making 311, dismissed Australia for a paltry 75 in just 28.4 overs (8-ball). Despite a lead of 236 runs, South Africa batted again, only to be dismissed for 99 in 46.2 overs. Set a target of 336, the visitors romped to a five-wicket victory.

Is Rangana Herath the first Test bowler to claim 100 wickets in the fourth innings of a Test match?

— Sunder Rao, Bangalore

He is in fact the fourth bowler to do so after Shane Warne (138), Muttiah Muralitharan (106) and Glenn McGrath (103). Herath now has 102 fourth innings wickets to his credit.

How often in ODIs have Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli been involved in running out each other? And what has been the result of the match?

— Aashish Mitra, Mumbai

They have been involved together in six run-outs in ODIs, with Kohli being unlucky on four occasions, while Rohit Sharma on two. India won three and lost three. The details are given below:
