Petra Kvitova set for Friday hospital discharge after knife attack

Petra Kvitova will be released from hospital on Friday following surgery on a severe left hand wound sustained in a knife attack, her representative has confirmed.

Czech Petra Kvitova was left "shaken, but fortunate to be alive" after she was attacked by an intruder in her apartment on Tuesday.

Petra Kvitova will be released from hospital on Friday following surgery on a severe left hand wound sustained in a knife attack, her representative has confirmed.

The two-time Wimbledon champion was left "shaken, but fortunate to be alive" after she was >attacked by an intruder in her apartment on Tuesday.

Kvitova suffered damage to tendons and nerves in her playing hand and underwent surgery in an attempt to repair the harm, with the procedure said to have gone "very well".

The Czech faces up to six months off the WTA circuit, but will at least be able to celebrate Christmas at home after she is discharged on Friday.

A brief statement from Kvitova's representative read: "Delighted to share the wonderful news that Petra Kvitova will be released from hospital tomorrow [Friday]."

"Petra will take part in a very brief press briefing before going home to spend Christmas with her family."
