India ODI captain Mithali Raj acknowledged Sportstar for recognising the performances of women cricketers at the Sportstar Aces Awards ceremony — supported by Supreme Committee of Delivery and Legacy, in association with MRF — at the Taj Mahal Palace in Mumbai on Thursday.

The 36-year-old batswoman was nominated in the Sportswoman of the Year (Cricket) category along with team-mates Smriti Mandhana (batswoman) and Poonam Yadav (leg-spinner).

Mandhana — the elegant southpaw — eventually walked away with the honours.

“As far as awards are concerned, I am very happy that women cricketers are being appreciated and acknowledged, and there is an award category for that as well. Earlier, we were pitted against the men cricketers but now, the performances of the women cricketers are appreciated too,” she told Sportstar at the red carpet.

Mithali also revealed how she got introduced to the magazine.

“The memories go way back. One of my seniors used to read Sportstar regularly. That’s how I got to know about the magazine. We shared a lot of stories about sports people and those days, it was an exclusive sports magazine where you could read stories of different sportspersons from different fields.”
