Swapna Barman

Swapna Barman made the headlines in the Asian Games for winning the country's first ever Asian Games gold medal in women's heptathlon.

Even though she had secured a gold medal in the Asian athletics championships in Bhubaneswar a year ago, Swapna was never considered a top contender in Jakarta because of her knee injury.

However, guided by her coach Subhash Sarkar, the 22-year-old from Jalpaiguri, West Bengal, overcame the injury and an aching tooth to snatch a gold medal in the continental event.

She was fourth in 100m hurdles (13.98s), first in high jump (1.82m), second in shotput (12.69m), second in 200m (26.08s), second in long jump (6.05m), first in javelin (50.63m) and fourth in 800m (2:21.13).

The 12-toed Swapna, who had managed a fifth place finish in the 2014 Incheon Asian Games, accumulated 6026 points to make history in the Indonesian capital.
