2018 Asian Games day 2 updates: Vinesh wins gold; India assured of Sepak Takraw medal

Day 2 Highlights:
- Wrestling: Vinesh Phogat wins gold in women's 50kg freestyle category.
- Deepak Kumar wins silver in the men's 10m air rile event.
- Lakshay Sheoran gives India its second shooting medal of the day. The 20-year-old wins silver in the men's trap event. ( Shooting report )
- Badminton: Both the men's and women's team were knocked out in the quarterfinals. While the women's team lost to Japan, the men's team bowed out to Indonesia. ( Women's report )
- India men's hockey team beats Indonesia 17-0 in its opening Pool A match.
- Pooja Dhanda, Sakshi Malik lose in wrestling semifinals. They are in contention for bronze medals in their respective weight categories.
- Sumit Malik to fight for bronze in the men's 125kg freestyle category.
- Kabaddi: India suffered its first loss in Asian Games against South Korea.
- Wrestling: Pooja Dhanda misses the bronze medal after losing to Japan's Katsuki Sakagami.

So that's all for the day. We have had exciting day at the Asian Games. India started with a silver medal and then went on to add the coveted gold through Vinesh Phogat. The badminton and kabaddi teams weren't on their mark but India is sure to get a medal from an unlikely sport - Sepak Takraw.
8.45 pm: SEPAK TAKRAW: India is now assured a medal in Sepak Takraw. The Indian men in the team Regu event beat Iran 21-16, 19-21, 21-17 to advance into the semifinals.

8.40 pm: WUSHU: India going good in Wushu. Narender Grewal beats Clemente Jr Tabugara of the Philippines 2-1 and has advanced to the Sanda 60kg quarterfinal.
8.30 pm: TENNIS: Some more good news coming in from the tennis courts. India's Rohan Bopanna/Divij Sharan storm into the round-of-16 after beating Indonesia's David Susanto/Ignatius Susanto 6-3, 6-3.
8.20 pm: WUSHU: India's Surya Bhanu Partap Singh beats Abdul Haris Sofyan of Indonesia to advance to the Sanda 60kg quarterfinals.
7:55pm: HOCKEY: FULL-TIME! India 17 – 0 Indonesia! Four Indian players Mandeep, Dilpreet, Simranjeet, Akashdeep scored three or more goals while Rupinder Pal Singh, Amit Rohidas and Harmanpreet scored from penalty corners. P.R. Sreejesh and Co. will next play Hong Kong on Wednesday.
7.51pm: WRESTLING: Another bad day in office for India on the wrestling mat, barring Vinesh Phogat's gold medal feat. Sumit Malik loses 0-2 to Uzbekistan's Davit Modzmanashvili in the 125kg freestyle bronze medal match.
7:49pm: HOCKEY: Simranjeet and Amit Rohidas score within the span of three minutes to pile more misery on Indonesia. India 17-0!
7.47 pm: WRESTLING: In the men's 125 kg bronze medal match, India's Sumit Malik is up against Uzbekistan's Davit Modzmanashvili.
7:44pm: HOCKEY: Mandeep makes it 15-0! Vivek Sagar scoops the ball towards the right side and away from the reach of the goalkeeper and Mandeep is left with a tap-in.
7:40pm: HOCKEY: India wins back-to-back corners but the goalkeeper saves both the shots from Rupinder.
7:39pm: HOCKEY: Mandeep scores once again in the first minute of the final period. India 14-0!
7:38pm: HOCKEY: Final quarter starts!
7:36pm: HOCKEY: End of third-quarter! India 13-0!
7:35pm: HOCKEY: India 13-0. Lalit adds another goal as he scores off a Simranjeet's reverse hit.
7:30pm: HOCKEY: A rare foray into the opposition half by Indonesia. But Amit Rohidas intercepts the ball and in no time Mandeep narrowly misses the goal at the other end.
7:28pm: HOCKEY: Simranjeet makes it 12-0! The forward collects a clever pass from Sunil from the byline and calmly finishes it past the goalkeeper.
7:25pm: HOCKEY: India now has the chance to better the results of Korea's 11-0 win over Hong Kong and Japan's win over Sri Lanka with the same margin earlier in the day.
7:22pm: HOCKEY: India 11-0! Dilpreet scores another goal and completes his hat-trick after collecting a pass from Akashdeep inside the area.
7:21pm: HOCKEY: Harmanpreet scores the 10th goal for India from a corner.
7.12 pm: WRESTLING: Another loss for India. Sakshi Malik loses her bronze medal 62 kg match 2-12 to Korea's Sim Jong Rim.
7:10pm: HOCKEY: HALF-TIME! India 9 – 0 Indonesia. There goes the hooter bringing an end to an entertaining first thirty minutes where India has dominated the match right from the start.
7:07pm: HOCKEY: India 9-0! Mandeep and Dilpreet adds two more goals in the span of two minutes to bring India closer to the two digit figure on the scoreline.
7:04pm: HOCKEY: Vivek Sagar joins the fun now. Another sojourn into the box by Akashdeep puts Vivek through to the goal and the midfielder seizes the chance. Seventh goal for India without an answer.
7:01pm: HOCKEY: Sunil makes it 6-0! The forward plays a one-two with Sardar Singh on the edge of the area and beats the goalkeeper with ease.
7.02 pm: WUSHU: India's Santosh Kumar beats Yemen's Zaid Wazea 2-0 in the 56kg round-of-16 match.
6:59pm: HOCKEY: Sardar Singh is all over the pitch passing, dribbling, intercepting loose passes. Indonesia is unable to devise a plan for the midfielder's mastery.
6:56pm: HOCKEY: Mandeep's reverse hit flies away from the goal making the umpire duck for dear life. But the Indians come back again with Akashdeep's hit deflected over the net by the goalie.
6:55pm: HOCKEY: Fifth-ranked India is proving too strong for the unranked host with Akashdeep and Simranjeet making light work of the Indonesian defence.
6:53pm: HOCKEY: Second-quarter starts!
6:51: HOCKEY: First quarter ends! India 5 - 0 Indonesia
6:44pm: HOCKEY: Simranjeet makes it 5-0! Simranjeet takes out three defenders and unleashes a ferocious reverse stick strike into the back of the net.
6.45 pm: GYMNASTICS: Meanwhile, in Artistic Gymnastics, India has missed the qualification by a whisker. The team of Ashish Kumar, Rakesh Patra, Gaurav Kumar, Yogeshwar Singh and Siddharth Verma finish 9th with a score of 229.950. The top-8 advance to the next round and Iran was the 8th team to qualify with a score of 230.300. So near, yet so far!
6:42pm: HOCKEY: Indonesian gifts a goal to make it 4-0 for India. Harmanpreet's reverse stick is through the goalkeeper's legs and hits one of the defender's stick and rolls into the net.
6.43 pm: WRESTLING: Pooja runs out of gas and loses the bronze medal match 1-6 to Japan's Katsuki Sakagami in the women's freestyle 57 kg.
6:39pm: HOCKEY: India 3-0! The third penalty corner is saved by the Indonesian goalkeeper but Dilpreet is lurking on the right side and smashes the rebound into the net.
6.38 pm: WRESTLING: End of the first half, Pooja leads 1-0 over Katsuki.
6.35 pm: WRESTLING: India's Pooja Dhanda is up against Katsuki Sakagami in the brzone medal match in the women's freestyle 57 kg.
6:34pm: HOCKEY: India 2-0! India wins another corner but Rupinder's shot hits the rear guard on the right side and the umpire awards India a penalty strike and Rupinder goes 2-0 ahead.
6:31pm: HOCKEY: GOAL INDIA! India wins a corner in the first minute and Rupinder Pal Singh scores with a powerful drag flick. India 1-0 Indonesia
6.18 pm: SWIMMING: 4x200m relay: Another poor performance in the pool by India. India's Srihari Nataraj, Avinash Mani, Saurabh Sangvekar and Neel Roy, who started in Lane 1 have finished last, 8th, with a timing of 7.35.07. Meanwhile, the Japanese team has created an Asian Games record with a timing of 7.05.17.
GOLD FOR INDIA 5:52pm: Wrestling: Vinesh Phogat gave India its second gold in wrestling with a 6-2 win over Japan's Yuki Irie. The Commonwealth Games gold medallist was dominant right from the first round and fittingly won the gold in 50kg freestyle category. |
5.33 pm: GYMNASTICS: In Parallel Bars, India is ranked 13th with 25.700 points and with a total of 141.650 points, India is ranked 13th at the end of 4/6 events.
5.21 pm: TENNIS: Men's doubles: Things are looking great for India. Another win in doubles. This time it is the pair of Sumit Nagal/Ramkumar Ramanathan who register a 6-1, 6-1 win over Nepal's Samrakshyak Bajracharya/Abhishek Bastola.
5.18 pm: TENNIS: Women's doubles: Looks like it is a good day on the courts. India's Ankita Raina/Prarthana Thombare advance to the pre-quarterfinals with a 6-0, 6-0 win over arch-rivals Pakistan's Sarah Mahboob Khan/Ushna Suhail.
5.17 pm: GYMNASTICS: With three out of six events completed in Artistic Gymnastics, India is now placed 11th with a score of 115.950. In the Vault event, India scored 41.350 points to be ranked 8th.
5.05 pm: GYMNASTICS: India is placed 13th with a score of 74.600 in the qualification ground. India is ranked 10th in the Pommel Horse (34.65 points) and seventh in Rings with (39.95).
4.50 pm: GYMNASTICS: We have the men's qualification round underway. India's Ashish Kumar, Rakesh Patra, Gaurav Kumar, Yogeshwar Singh and Sidhartth Verma will be in the spotlight.
4.45 pm: TENNIS: India's Prajnesh Gunneswaran beats the home lad Fitriadi Rifqi 6-2, 6-0 to advance into the round-of-16 while in the women's singles Thandi Kamran Kaur gets the better of Mongolia's Altansarnai Jargal 6-1, 6-0. How easy was that?
4:30pm: Badminton: INDIA KNOCKED OUT: Men's team goes down 1-3 to Indonesia in the quarterfinals. Badminton has been one of India's strong points in the multi-discipline games but unfortunately not this time around in the team events. India's Manu Attri / B. Sumeeth Reddy lost 21-14, 21-18 to Fajar Alfian / Muhammad Rian Ardianto. The hopes now rest on the individuals.
4:27pm: Volleyball: Men's Pool F match: India secures a 3-0 win (27-25, 25-22, 25-19) win over Hong Kong.
4:10pm: Sepak takraw: India loses to Indonesia 3-0 in a preliminary Group B encounter.
4:00pm: Volleyball: Men's Pool F match: India wins the second set 25-22 to go 2-0 up against Hong Kong.
3:50pm: Badminton: Men's Team event. H.S. Prannoy defeats Jonathan Christie 21-15, 19-21, 21-19 to keep India alive in the quarterfinal contest. India now trails 1-2 against Indonesia.
3:40pm: Volleyball: Men's Pool F match: India is 1-0 up after winning the first set 27-25 in an intense battle against Hong Kong.

ANOTHER MEDAL IN SHOOTING ( Fourth medal for India) Lakshay Sheoran wins silver in the men's trap. The 20-year-old finishes with a score of 43 in the final. Yang Kunpi of Chinese Taipei takes the gold. |
3:30pm: Kabaddi: UPSET: India loses to Korea 23-24 in the men's Group A match. It is India's first loss in Asian Games history.
3:02pm: Shooting: Men's Trap Final: Manavjit Singh Sandhu eliminated in the trap final. He finishes fourth. Laskhay is assured of a medal. He is currently placed second.
2:50pm: Kabaddi: Men's Group A match: India is trailing Korea 11-14.
2:40pm: Badminton: It's getting difficult for India in the men's team event as well. India is now 0-2 down against Indonesia after Satwiksairaj Rankireddy/ Chirag Shetty lose their doubles match against World No. 1 Marcus Gideon/ Kevin Sanjaya Sujamuljo 21-19, 19-21, 16-21.
2:35pm: Tennis: Ramkumar Ramanathan wins his first round match against Hong Kong's Wong Hong-kit 6-0, 7-6.
2:20pm: Wrestling: VINESH PHOGAT reaches the final in women's 50kg category. India assured of at least one medal in the women's wrestling now. Phogat won her bout in quick time, securing 10-0 to win over Uzbek Dauletbike Yakhshimuratova.
2:10pm: Wrestling: Sakshi Malik was leading 7-6 till the last 10 seconds, but India's hopes were dashed when her opponent, in a surprise move, took Sakshi out of the ring and gets two points to win the semifinal 8-7. Sakshi challenges, but Kyrgyzstan's Aisuluu Tynbekova named the winner.
2:00pm: Wrestling: Pooja Dhanda loses in the 57kg semifinal to North Korea's Myong Suk Jong.
1.47pm: Badminton: Men's Team Quarterfinal (India vs Indonesia) Kidambi Srikanth loses to World No. 12 Anthony Sinikuka Ginting 21-23,22-20, 10-21. India is already out of contention in the women's team event after going down to Japan earlier in the day. (Report here )
1.43pm: Wrestling: Sakshi Malik wins her quarterfinal bout 10-0 against Kazakh Ayaulym Kassymova.
1.25pm: Tennis: Karman Kaur Thandi advances to the pre-quarters with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 win over Mongolia's Jargal Altansarnai in the first round.
1.15pm: Wrestling: Pooja Dhanda i nches closer to a medal. She storms into the semifinal with a 12-1 win over Uzbekistan's Nabira Esenbaeva in the 57kg category.
1.02pm: Shooting: Seema Tomar finishes sixth in the final of Women's trap event.
12.58 pm: Wrestling: Vinesh Phogat has entered the last four of the women's 50kg wrestling.
12.57 pm: Badminton: Kidambi Srikanth loses the first game 23-21 to Anthony Ginting in what is the first match of the men's team badminton.
12.42 pm: Trap shooting: Seema Tomar is placed 6th after 10 shots.
12.38 pm: Trap shooting: The women's trap shooting final is underway, Seema Tomar the Indian representative in the event.
12.32 pm: Badminton: Kidambi Srikanth is in action in the first match of men's team badminton between India and Indonesia, taking on Anthony Ginting.
12.26 pm: Wrestling: Pinki Pinki loses by technical superiority to Mongolia's Sumiya Erdenechimeg in the 1/8th round of the women's 53kg freestyle wrestling.
12.14 pm: Men's handball: India records a victory after three straight preliminary-round defeats, beats Malaysia 45-19.
12.07 pm: Women's basketball: India suffers a 105-54 defeat to Korea in women's basketball, following up the 61-84 defeat to Chinese Taipei and 61-79 defeat to Kazakhstan.
12.06 pm: Trap shooting: Seema Tomar qualifies for the women's trap shooting finals.
11.52 am: Wrestling: Sumit Sumit loses in the 1/8th round of the men's 125kg wrestling to Parviz Hadibasmanj of Iran.
11.42 am: Wrestling: Vinesh Phogat is through to the quarterfinals of the 50kg women's wrestling with a 8-0 win over China's Sun Yanan.
11.28 am: Shooting: China's Zhao secures the gold medal in the women's 10m air rifle final.
11.20 am: Shooting: Apurvi Chandela has been eliminated from the women's 10m air rifle, finishes with a final score of 186.0.
11.04 am: Badminton: P. V. Sindhu and Ashwini Ponnappa go down 13-21 12-21 to Japanese pair of Misaki Matsutomo and Takahashi Ayaka, who help Japan knock India out of women's team badminton.
10.52 am: Shooting: Apurvi Chandela is set to begin her quest for a gold in the women's 10m air rifle final.
10.35 am: Tennis, women's singles: Ankita Raina beats Indonesia's Beatrice Gumulya 6-2 6-4, progresses to the quarterfinals.
10.19 am: Badminton: Saina Nehwal loses the final game 16-21 and goes down 11-21 25-23 16-21 to Nozomi Okuhara, who gives Japan a 2-1 lead.
10.15 am: Shooting: Apurvi Chandela qualifies for the 10m air rifle finals.
10.14 am: Swimming: India has qualified for the men's 4x200m freestyle relay finals.
10.00 am: Kabaddi: Indian women's kabaddi team beats Thailand 21-12.
9.55 am: Badminton: Saina Nehwal levels the match against Nozomi Okuhara with a tremendous comeback in the second game (she was 15-19 down at one point), which she wins 25-23 to force a deciding third game.

9.36 am: Shooting: Ravi Kumar is eliminated from the men's 10m air rifle final, Deepak Kumar continues to remain in the hunt.
9.31 am: Ravi Kumar has slipped to 4th after 16 shots.
9.25 am: Shooting: Ravi Kumar is third after the first stage of men's 10m air rifle final with a score of 103.3.
9.09 am: Sepaktakraw: India beats Iran 21-16 19-21 21- 17 in its first match of the Asian Games.
9.05 am: Kabaddi: Indian women are set to take on Thailand.
9.00 am: Badminton: Sara Sunil and Sikki Reddy have lost their match 15-21 6-21 to the Japanese pair of Sayaka Hirota and Yuki Fukushima.
8.50 am: Badminton: Meanwhile, Sara Sunil and Sikki Reddy are trailing their Japanese opponents by a game and 5-9 in the second game of the doubles match in the women's team badminton.
8.29 am: Swimming: Srihari Natraj has broken a national record in the men's 50m backstroke with a time of 26.19 seconds. However, he isn't guaranteed of a spot in the final yet because of his heat timing.
8.28 am: Shooting: Ravi Kumar and Deepak Kumar have qualified for the men's 10m Air Rifle final. They finished 4th and 5th with scores of 626.7 and 626.3.
8.24 am: Rowing: Dushyant Chauhan has qualified for the finals Men's Lightweight Single Sculls with a heat time of 7:43.08.
8.17 am: P.V Sindhu takes the second game 21-19 and wins the match! Yamaguchi gave her a good fight but the Indian shuttler does well to win in straight games.
8.12 am: The second game looks a lot like the first, with the score currently at 16-17 in Sindhu's favour.
8.03 am:Rowing: Dushyant tops his heat to qualify for the final in the men’s Lightweight Single Sculls.
7.59 am:Swimming: In the Men’s 800m freestyle qualification, 16-year-old Advait Page finishes third.
7.54 am: Sindhu takes the first game 18-21!
7.45 am: As expected, this has been a very tight game with the score at 14-16 in Sindhu's favour.
7.40 am: Sindhu started the match with a bang winning four points in a row before Yamaguchi earned four straight points to level the scores.
7.25 am:Badminton: India takes on Japan in the women's team quarterfinals. First up, its P.V. Sindhu vs Akane Yamaguchi.
7.20 am:Shooting: Deepak Kumar and Ravi Kumar are currently in action in the Men’s 10m Air Rifle Qualification.
