Bridge: India’s men’s and mixed teams qualify for semis

The two teams have thereby assured themselves of at least a bronze in the discipline at the Asian Games.

The 2018 Asian Games marks the first time the sporting discipline of bridge was introduced to the competition.

The Indian men’s and mixed teams qualified for the bridge semifinals, thereby assuring themselves of a medal in the discipline, at the Asian Games here on Saturday. At the end of qualification rounds, the men’s bridge team was placed fourth while the mixed team was second.

India’s super-mixed team, on the contrary, failed to qualify for the semifinals.

The team that takes the top spot in the qualification rounds will play the fourth team in the first semifinal; in the other, the second and third-placed teams take on each other. Both the losing semifinalists will win bronze.

India’s six-member men’s team is made up of these players — Jaggy Shivdasani, Rajeshwar Tewari, Ajay Khare, Raju Tolani, Debabrata Majumder and Sumit Mukherjee. The mixed team is made up of these players — Kiran Nadar, Hema Deora, Himani Khandelwal, Bachiraju Satyanarayana, Gopinath Manna and Rajeev Khandelwal.

The men’s team has an average age of 52; the average age of the mixed team, on the other hand, is 57.

The sport of bridge has been introduced for the first time in the ongoing Asian Games.
