Asian Athletics Championships, Day 2: As it happened - Tajinder, Gomathi bag gold; India's medal tally at 10

Welcome to Sportstar's coverage of the Asian Athletics Championships 2019 currently underway in Doha. India has had a fantastic day so far, with Gomathi Marimuthu and Tajinder Singh Toor bagging gold medals.

Welcome to Sportstar's coverage of the Asian Athletics Championships 2019 currently underway in Doha. India has had a fantastic day so far, with Gomathi Marimuthu bagging gold in the women's 800m final and Tajinder Singh Toor winning men's shot put gold being the highlights.

Highlights: Tajinder Singh Toor won gold at the men's shot put event. Gomathi Marimuthu won 800m gold, finishing with a personal best timing. Shivpal Singh won the medal silver in javelin throw with a personal best. Jabir Madari Palliyalil and Sarita Gayakwad bagged bronze medals for India in the men's and women's 400m hurdles respectively. Dutee Chand rewrote national record to qualify for the women's 100m final. India's has won nine medals thus far (1 gold, 3 silver and 5 bronze)

 

DAY 2 LIVE UPDATES

- Dutee Chand is unable to replicate her stunning form from earlier today and finishes fifth in the women's 100m final with a timing of 11.44s. She had clocked a national record 11.26s in the semifinals this morning.

- Another gold for India! Tajinder Singh Toor wins men's shot put gold with a season's best throw of 20.22m. It's still under his personal best of 22.75m is the Asian record. 

- Purnima Hembram finishes fourth and Swapna Barman fifth in the heptathlon 200m event.  Barman goes down from first to third in the standings after four events with 3521 points. Hembram is fifth with 3308 points.

- Tajinder Toor leads men's Shot Put with a season's best throw of 20.22m after two rounds.

- Heartbreak for India as Jinson Johnson drops out of the track at the last bend during the men's 800m final . What happened to him is not clear yet but he was running in fourth position and looked like he could have made podium. Muhammed Afsal, the other Indian in the fray, finished seventh.

- The men's Shot Put final has begun and India's Tajinder Pal Toor is in action. We'll let you know if he pulls off any monster throws.

- India wins its first gold of the tournament!

GOLD FOR INDIA! Gomathi Marimuthu wins the 800m gold with a personal best timing of 2:02.70 seconds. After running in third for most of the race, Gomathi made a dash to the finish on the final stretch, crossing the line first.

- Javelin throw silver:

Another silver for India! Shivpal Singh throws a personal best of 86.23m to pocket the silver medal. Yesterday, Annu Rani won the women's javelin throw silver.

- 400m final:

If Arokia Rajiv had been .12 of a second faster, he may have finished with a bronze. The Indian quartermiler has to be content with a fourth-place finish with a time of 45.37s which is, in fact, his personal best. Muhammad Anas, the defending champion, has an off day and finishes eighth after clocking 46.10s

- NATIONAL RECORD: Another day, another record for Dutee Chand! The Indian sprinter clocks 11.26s in the semifinals to break the record she set in the heats the previous day! She finishes on top in the second semifinal to seal her berth in the final of the women's 100m.

- BRONZE:

M.P. Jabir finishes third with a personal best time of 49.13s. It is enough for the Indian to make the cut for the World Championships (49.30s qualifying mark).

 

- BRONZE:

Sarita Gayakwad is the first to add to India's medal tally on Monday, winning the bronze medal in the women's 400m hurdles with a timing of 57.22.  She, however, needed a time of 56.00 or better to qualify for the World Championships.
