India’s boxing squad for the Asian Games will be decided on June 26 after the selection committee meeting.

To avoid controversy over selection process, the Boxing Federation of India (BFI) has decided that the selection for the Games will be based on the performances of the pugilists in all national and international competitions from the time span of January 1 to June 25, this year.

“The top boxers (in men’s and women’s categories), will compete in international tourneys till the mid-week of June and once they are back, they will be assessed,” BFI secretary general, Jay Kowli, told

Sportstar.

Different Indian boxing teams would be travelling to Ireland, Kazakhstan, Russia and Mongolia, starting this week and the trips would include both training and competitions. While the men’s team will have four tournaments, the women’s team will have three.

Once the pugilists return, their performances will be considered and there will be an internal sparring for men boxers on May 31 and June 15. The women pugilists will spar against each other on June 16. “We will once have a selection trial if there is a draw in a particular event category. In this process of selection, we aim to maintain fairness and the overall development of the boxers will also be taken into consideration,” Kowli said.

If needed, the selection trials will be conducted on June 28 and 29.

The BFI has also issued a letter to the boxers (a copy of which is with Sportstar ), mentioning the details about the selection process. “We have been trying to follow this process for a while and finally, we have been able to implement it,” Kowli said.
