Viswanathan Anand drew with Shakhriyar Memedyarov to settle for the tied fifth place before Magnus Carlsen outwitted Anish Giri 1.5-0.5 in the two five-minute blitz tie-break games to win the Tata Steel chess tournament here on Sunday.

Vladimir Kramnik punished B. Adhiban for an ill-advised trading of rook for a knight to finish joint third with Mamedyarov. Anand and Wesley So, who defeated Hou Yifan, shared the fifth place. In the Challengers section, top seed Vidit Gujrathi won the title and with it, gained the right to play in the Masters section in 2019. In the final round, Vidit drew with local Jorden van Foreest in 24 moves to reach an unsurpassable tally of nine points in the 13th-round competition. A win-less D. Harika (5) ended her campaign with her 10th draw in the competition after facing Poland’s Michal Krasenkow. In this strong field, Harika performed at 2534-level way over her rating of 2497!
