CWG 2018: India prevails over Wales in a humdinger

India defeated Wales 4-3 in a Pool B encounter of the Commonwealth Games on Sunday.

The India men's hockey team dug deep into its reserves to secure a hard-earned win against Wales - its first in two matches - in the XXI Commonwealth Games at the Gold Coast hockey centre here on Sunday.

The Pool B encounter, despite all the Indian domination in building attacks and controlling the ball, was still a touch-and-go affair before it was decided 4-3 in favour of the Asia Cup champion.

The Welsh, however, was in no way disgraced, as it staged a comeback every time it was pushed into a tight corner by the opposition.

After a barren first quarter, Dilpreet Singh opened the scoring for India, slamming home a perfect pass from S. V. Sunil.

However, moments later, the Welsh restored parity through a penalty corner conversion by Gareth Furlong.

Furlong's brace then brought Wales back into the match after India had regained the lead, first through Mandeep Singh in the 28th-minute and then Harmanpreet Singh in the 57th—minute.

But with time running out, India earned a penalty corner after a video referral, and S.V. Sunil was quick to dart in, collect the ball on the rebound and score the winner.
