CWG 2018: Mary Kom surges into final

The five-time World champion beat Anusha Dilrukshi of Sri Lanka.

Mary Kom booked a place in the final of the 48kg women's boxing event.

M. C. Mary Kom, 35, still retains the zeal and hunger to excel at every available opportunity. And on Wednesday, as she returned to action in the women’s (48kg) semifinal bout against Anusha Dilrukshi (Sri Lanka) at the XXI Commonwealth Games, her prowess was once again on display.

Despite a nervous start, the five-time World champion got her combination of punches right, trumping Anusha to book a place in the final.

Meanwhile, India's medal glut continued to surge as three more boxers assured themselves of a medal each. Gaurav Solanki won against Charles Keana (Papua New Guinea) in the men’s 52kg while Vikas Krishan registered a points win over Benny Muziyo (Zambia) in the 75kg category. Manish Kumar, albeit a close contest, beat rival Calum French (England) in the 60kg event.

However, Sarita Devi (60 kg) lost to Anja Stridsman (Australia) while Pinki Rani (51 kg) lost to Lisa Whiteside (England) on a split decision.
