Summary- India defeated Wales 3-1 as Vandana Katariya scored a brace with Gurjit scoring the ther goal. Katariya proved yet again as to why she is one of India’s key players, scoring a brace in a match that saw some brilliant defence by the Welsh squad. While India held the most attack circle penetration of 76 per cent, its ball possession was only of 56 per cent in comparison to Wales’ 24 per cent.

FOURTH QUARTER
15’ - A penalty corner for Wales as Udita touches the ball. WALES SCORES AS HUGHES SCORES A GOAL THAT TOUCHES GRACE’S FOOT. INDIA STILL LEAD 2-1
14’- What a save by Thomas as Navneet and Monika attack simultaneously. Thomas uses her left leg to save the ball.
11’- Ball runs off defenders stick. A brilliant shot by Navneet but narrowly misses the goalpost
10’- Vandana hits the ball in Monroe’s foot and India gets another PC. A wasted chance for India as they take it easy and miss the chance.
7’- Monika hits but the ball lobs upwards and the ball goes past the goalpost.
5’-Monika gets the cross pitch pass as the Indians try to enter the Welsh’s D. But the defenders stop India from doing so.
3’- India force the Welsh to play within their D. While Wales doesn’t have a similar speed when compared to India, they manage to keep the ball possession.
1’- Salima comes via the right hand side, but Vandana fails to connect and the ball goes out.
THIRD QUARTER
15’- India relies on their midfielders and front runners to help them score their goals. The pressure is back on Wales.
13’- A brilliant save by Thomas, who blocks Lalremsiami’s shot. But PC for India as Gurjit drag flicks to the right side of the Wales goalkeeper Thomas as INDIA SCORES YET ANOTHER GOAL. They are up 2-0!
11’- India appealing for a penalty corner and are successful. Gurjit Kaur drag flicks and Vandana deflects the ball and the ball rolls inside the goalpost. INDIA LEADS 1-0.
9’- India pressing Wales to ensure they go back, but the R. Daniel use right flank to put India on the back foot.
6’- The passes from both teams are equally poor as they make rookie mistakes by giving the opposition the ball while passing.
4’- Sarah Jones tries to enter the Indian D, but its intercepted by the Indians.
2’- Monika takes a PC but the ball is saved and ends up going out. A wide angle shot does no good for India.
1’- A rather defensive game by both teams.
SECOND QUARTER
15’- India try their best to stop Wales from entering their D as it goes to the last minute.
13’- Lalresiami almost scores a goal but ball goes wide off the goal post.
11’ - Sharmila fails yet another counter-attack as Wales’ defenders intercept the passes.
9’- A breakaway for India as they run from their D with the ball to Wales D.
6’- India try to aim to get into Wales’ D as they pass, but Wales defenders intercept with a fast counter-attack but they fail to execute their passes.
3’- Vandana Katariya aims, but misses as Welsh player saves it.
1’- PENALTY CORNER FOR INDIA. But they fail to make use of the opportunity. Wales takes the ball away in a quick counter-attack.

While India has a 4-1 head-to-head record against Wales, the last time the two sides met- Wales defeated India 3-2 at the Commonwealth Games in 2018.

India opened its Commonwealth Games 2022 campaign in hockey with a thumping 5-0 win over Ghana in a Group A match at the University of Birmingham Hockey and Squash centre on Friday.
The Indian women earned an early minute in the fourth minute, with Gurjit Kaur making most of it, as she slotted the ball into the left corner of the net. In the second quarter, Neha’s shot was deflected off into the goal by a Ghanaian defender, with India going 2-0 up at half-time.

India continued to pile misery on Ghana when play resumed as Sangita found the net after a counterattack and Gurjit scored her second for the day minutes later.
The icing on the cake came in the last quarter when Salima Tete, one of India’s most experienced hockey players, ended a counter attack to finish a five-star performance in the United Kingdom.
The Indian women’s hockey team will play Wales next on July 30 while the men’s hockey team will start its campaign against Ghana the next day.
Wales lost to Canada in its first match 0-4 and will look to improve its performance against India.
