Hong Kong, which played its last ODI in the 2018 edition of the Asia Cup against India, will be up against the same opponent but in a different format in the Asia Cup 2022 group stage fixture on Wednesday.

Hong Kong was included in group A after it topped the qualifiers among three other teams - Kuwait, Singapore and UAE. Meanwhile India, after a win against rival Pakistan in its campaign opener, will have the momentum heading into this match and will look to secure the top spot.

When the two teams met in the 2018 edition, the Men in Blue came out on top with the help of a Shikhar Dhawan century.

Hong Kong, chasing a target of 286, got off to a brilliant start courtesy of a 174-run first-wicket stand from Nizakat Khan and then skipper Anshuman Rath. But the innings went downhill after that as Kuldeep Yadav provided a breakthrough in the 35th over which shifted the momentum towards India. Hong Kong then lost seven wickets for just 85 runs as India narrowly won the match by 26 runs.

The loss knocked Hong Kong out of the tournament, having earlier suffered a crushing eight-wicket loss against Pakistan.

Skipper Rohit Sharma and Dhawan provided a solid start for India, building 45 runs between them after being sent into bat. It was followed by a 116-run partnership between Dhawan and Ambati Rayudu that ensured India reached a decent 285 at the end of 50 overs. Dhawan was adjudged player of the match for his 120-ball 127.

India eventually went on to win the tournament, beating Bangladesh by three wickets in the final while Hong Kong never played another ODI.

Wednesday’s fixture will mark the first meeting between India and Hong Kong in a T20I match.
