BCCI is hiring, no extension for Ramesh Powar

The new women’s team coach will be given a two-year term and the age limit is capped at 60; Powar had his last day in office on Friday.

Ramesh Powar is still eligible to apply for the job but it remains to be seen if BCCI considers his candidature after the face-off with Mithali Raj.

 

The Board of Control for Cricket in India has decided not to give an extension to women’s team chief coach, Ramesh Powar, and has invited fresh applications for the role.

Powar, who was appointed for three months since August, had the last day in office on Friday and the BCCI has asked applicants to send in their resume on or before December 14.

The interview of the shortlisted candidates will be held at the BCCI headquarters here on December 20. The new coach will be given a two-year term and the age limit is capped at 60.

Sportstar was the first publication to have reported about such a possibility earlier this week.

The candidate should have represented India or any other country at the international level or must be an NCA Level ‘C’ certified coach.

The candidate could have a similar certification from a reputed organisation and must have played in a minimum of 50 first-class games.

The notice issued by the BCCI states that the candidate “should have the experience of coaching an international team for a period of minimum one season or a T20 franchise for minimum two seasons.”

However, by the CoA specifications, if the appointment process begins, it has to be managed by the Cricket Advisory Committee.

As Powar’s contract was not extended, he may still apply. But with the Board making it clear that the candidate should have the experience of coaching an international team for a period of minimum one season or a T20 franchise for minimum two seasons, it needs to be seen whether the former India spinner would even be considered for the job after his recent face-off with ODI captain Mithali Raj.

In the past, coaches have lost out after conflict with players, and Powar not getting an extension is not a first.

Last year, Purnima Rau was unceremoniously shown the door a couple of months before the World Cup after some senior players were not happy. Earlier this year, senior player Harmanpreet Kaur complained to the CoA against Tushar Arothe, who had to eventually step down.

Asked whether the CAC — which comprises Sourav Ganguly, Sachin Tendulkar and V.V.S. Laxman —will be involved in the process, BCCI CEO, Rahul Johri, told this publication: “As per the CoA guidelines and instructions, we will follow the due process required for selection.”

After Arothe's exit, the BCCI had conducted an interview for the women's team coaches on August 10, which was attended by 20 candidates. The entire process was conducted by CoA member Diana Edulji, Johri and BCCI GM, Cricket Operations, Syed Saba Karim. But the process had to be called off later as the CAC was not involved. 

It has also been learnt that the Board is also looking at proven names such as Tom Moody, Dav Whatmore and Venkatesh Prasad. But the picture will be clear once the application process ends.

Eligibility •Should have represented India or any other country at international level OR •NCA Level ‘C’ certified coach or a similar certification from a reputed organisation/institute and a minimum of 50 FC games OR •Should have the experience of coaching an international team for a period of minimum 1 season or a T20 franchise for minimum 2 seasons •Should be less than 60 years of age. •A thorough understanding of the game or playing/coaching experience at the highest level •An appreciation of the finer points of cricket. •The highest levels of integrity, discipline and motivation •A proven ability to manage and interact with people from different backgrounds and cultures •An ability to think strategically and logically, lead and coordinate activities in a team located across the world •Computer literate with excellent written and oral communication skills •Candidates should adhere to BCCI’s conflict of interest policy and other rules & regulations as amended from time to time.

 

Key Accountability •Guiding and Supporting the specialised coaching staff to build a strong Women national team •Give strategic direction to the team management •Develop women cricket coaching set up •Develop position papers on all women cricket related matters. •Determine and monitor the compliance of the set standards of fitness and high performance of NCA with the national team •Contribute to the development and ongoing review of the BCCI’s overall strategy for women’s cricket •Develop and maintain effective working relationships with coaching staff members, players and cricket operations team •Ongoing review and implementation of BCCI’s player regulations •Preparation and presentation of reports to the BCCI Board and committees as required
