Herath to retire after Galle Test

Sri Lanka spin veteran Rangana Herath has decided to call time on his international career after the first Test against England in Galle.

According to reports, the 40-year-old Test specialist is reluctant to play the entire series. He has not played a full series since January 2017.

Herath, the most successful left-arm spinner, is second in the list of Sri Lanka’s leading wicket-takers. Muttiah Muralitharan tops the list (800 wickets), and Herath is on 430. Among the current bowlers, only Stuart Broad (433) and James Anderson (564) are ahead.

The swansong in Galle will be an emotional affair as Herath made his Test debut at the same venue in 1999.

Despite knee injuries, Herath carried the Muralitharan spin legacy among the islanders with pride. He wasn’t a regular in the first decade of his international career. He has claimed as many as 230 wickets after turning 35.

Herath is also one of the last active Test cricketers from the '90s.

The Galle Test starts November 6.
