Injury rules JP Duminy out of remaining ODIs

The all-rounder, who suffered a cut on his hand in the third ODI in Rajkot, will be replaced by Dean Elgar.

JP Duminy served as a handy second spinner for South Africa in the T20Is and ODIs in their tour of India so far.

South Africa’s batting all-rounder JP Duminy was ruled out of the two remaining One-Day Internationals (ODIs) between India and South Africa, owing to a cut on his hand that he sustained in the last ODI in Rajkot. He is replaced in the squad by left-hand bat and left-arm spinner Dean Elgar.

Duminy, an off-break bowler and a middle-order batsman, has consistently fulfilled his role as a second spinner to Imran Tahir in the limited-overs’ internationals that have been played in India in South Africa’s tour of the country so far. His absence will hurt the team’s reliance on him to provide a handy spin option in conditions encouraging spin.

He will, however, remain with the team to work on his recovery to be fit for the Tests: South Africa are scheduled to play four Tests on the conclusion of the ongoing ODI series.

Elgar, a regular in the South African Test team, participated in the List A games South Africa A played against the ‘A’ teams of India and Australia in Chennai in August. In the lead-up to his call-up, he has scored two half-centuries in two domestic one-day innings for Titans.

South Africa’s bowling attack for the upcoming ODI in Chennai could be further reshaped with a possible omission of fast bowler Morne Morkel, who bowled through quad pain en route to a match-winning spell of 4 for 39 in his 10 overs in the third ODI in Rajkot.

South Africa lead the five-match series 2-1.
