Robert Key, who opened for England in 15 Tests between 2002 and 2005, announced his retirement from professional cricket on Monday.
The 36-year-old Key scored 775 Test runs at an average of 31 including a double hundred (221) against West Indies at the Lord’s in 2004. Key also starred in five One-Day Internationals and a T20I.
Despite his modest numbers at the international level, Key amassed 19,419 runs in his first class career. He played for Kent since his senior debut in 1998.
“By mutual agreement the club and I have come to an agreement after a long and enjoyable career to call it a day,” Key was quoted in Kent’s official website.
“It’s time for the younger players to have their chance and it doesn't feel right for me to stand in their way anymore,” he added.
“I would like to say a massive thank you to all who have supported me throughout my career. It has been a great honourto represent Kent. I don't know what the future holds but I look forward to what the next chapter has in store.”
