Welcome to Sportstar's Highlights of the Indian Premier League 2021 match between Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on Sunday.
Delhi Capitals has just strolled through a 195-run chase with sheer nonchalance at the Wankhede in a Super Sunday finish. The big hits were surely on the cards and Punjab got it right at the start with Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul, albeit at a lower strike-rate, led Punjab to a decent yet just barely-par 195/4 on this wicket.
Delhi had to have a strong start if they were to trounce a Punjab bowling line-up that had enough firepower to defend the total. However, a Dhawan masterclass single-handedly took the game away from them - a blistering 92 off 49 balls - pushed the Punjab bowlers down the barrel.
This will be a hard pill to swallow for skipper Rahul on his birthday as his fine set of bowlers have all taken a pounding tonight.
Shikhar Dhawan (Player of the match): It was a conscious effort from my side (to increase SR) and I started taking more risks. I'm not afraid of changes. I'm always open towards changes and I make sure I give it a good try in the nets and then in the games. I'm not scared of getting out as well. I've worked on the leg-side shots, coming in the crease, using the pace of the bowler. Depends who's bowling and what plans I make for them. My slog shot has improved. It was there before as well, but now it's [more frequent]. I'm very relaxed these days. If I'm not relaxed at this time, then when?! I'm relaxed but also attentive. Love batting with Shaw, we made a huge impact and that was great for our team. Rishabh Pant (winning captain): I've already started enjoying the captaincy but we were under pressure at the start because the wicket was not doing much and they had a good start. Good job by our bowlers to keep them to 190. There are many things you can talk to with Shikhar but end of the day what he's given to the team is commendable. I like to keep the environment light so that people enjoy their cricket and make the most of their opportunities. Stoinis: (jokes) At the 10-over mark we were trying to keep them under 250. [It's about] the cliches of cricket, the good partnerships to leave it for the finishers at the end. S hikhar's brilliant, he's carried on his form from last year. He's always hungry and he's backed it up from last season. It's important as an individual to get into the tournament early. The start of the tournament is when you can try a few things. As of eight games in, every game feels like it's a final. So we think by 5-6-7 games we need to have everyting sorted. [With his bowling] wasn't required tonight but it is a work in progress and we'll all be required. KL Rahul (losing captain): Victory would've been sweet on my birthday. Slightly disappointing but we've still got a lot of games left. In the end when you look at it, it does looke 10-15 short. But I felt batting in the middle 196 was really good. The first half Mayank and I were saying the same, that we'd be good if we got 180-190. But obviously at Wankhede there's dew and credit to Dhawan. Dew did sway things, bowling second's always a challenge at Wankhede. We always try to prepare for such conditions but it does get difficult in the situations. I think it would be fair [the ball changes every two overs, Doull's suggestions] and I'm not just saying that because I'm on the losing side. I did ask the umpires to change the ball a couple of times but that's not in the rules. |

Delhi 198/4 after 18.2 overs: Game, done and dusted. Delhi has bulldozed Punjab Kings out of the match in some style!
Delhi 188/4 after 18 overs: Richardson gets Pant to mistime the pull and Hooda at long-on plays out an infinite juggle before holding onto it. Lalit Yadav, the new man, comes in and sweeps Richardson for a boundary. Delhi is nearly through, needing just eight of two overs!
Delhi 180/3 after 17 overs: Stoinis shuns Shami and this here must be the game for Delhi! An overpitched delivery first-up is smoked by Stoinis down the ground. Shami gets one over Stoinis' waist as the edge miraculously carried to Saxena to the left of point. The cries for a wicket down as the third-umpire adjudges it to be a no-ball. Stoinis then pummels Shami for two more whopping boundaries down the ground as a 20-run over has nearly rallied Delhi home.
Delhi 160/3 after 16 overs: Arshdeep hits the deck hard and forces Pant and new man Stoinis to rotate the strike with singles. Delhi needs 36 from four overs. This shouldn't be a tricky chase on this wicket but we never know!
Delhi 152/3 after 15 overs: Richardson snaps Dhawan, eight short of his third 100! A 107kph slower-ball is pushed in too full for Dhawan to operate the sweep. He misses it altogether as the ball rattles the stumps. What a knock has this been from the southpaw who has single-handedly eased the pressure of a massive chase for Delhi. Delhi 143/2 after 14 overs: 4,4,4, 5w - Dhawan is growing by the minute and smashed Meredith all around the park. The Aussie has lost his line and length altogether and it is evident with that drag-down delivery down leg-side, too far for even Rahul to hold onto behind the stumps. Delhi needs just 43 off 36 balls in a 196-run chase!
Delhi 125/2 after 13 overs: Dhawan unleashes beast mode! Shami has been smoked over long-on as Dhawan steps down and drags the delivery from outside off over the fence. This is some stroke-play from Dhawan as Delhi is making light work of the chase.
Delhi 117/2 after 12 overs: This must be frustrating for Saxena. After keeping Pant and Dhawan restricted to the singles, Saxena fends in a loose, short ball and Dhawan cashes in on it with a swift pull to the mid-wicket boundary.
Delhi 107/2 after 11 overs: Meredith into the attack and snaps his countryman Smith rightaway! A fiery bumper has put Smith in an uncomfortable position while going for a swat to the leg-side. The thick-edge carried to straight to Richardson at third-man and Smith's sluggish first outing for Delhi has come to an end. Steven Smith c Richardson b Meredith 9 (12b)
Delhi 99/1 after 10 overs: Cometh the hour, cometh the man! Dhawan gets himself to yet another fifty and instantly switches gear by pummeling Richardson over mid-wicket for a brilliant six. This has been just the start that Delhi needed from its openers and Dhawan has stepped up on the pedal ever since Shaw's dismissal.
Delhi 87/1 after 9 overs: Dhawan gets a massive reprieve as Hooda induces the inside-edge that nearly chops back to the stumps but instead rolls down the fine leg boundary. Dhawan cuts swiftly past a diving Gayle behind point to rack up another boundary.
Delhi 75/1 after 8 overs: Saxena returns for his second spell and darts it in line of the stumps to keep Smith and Dhawan under the pump. However, the offie pushed in a loose short-ball that was drilled back down the ground to the boundary by Dhawan.
Delhi 68/1 after 7 overs: Smith begins his Delhi stint with a flick to mid-wicket. Hooda has kept things simple in his first over as Dhawan and Smith certainly does not vouch for a risk outside their line at the moment.
Delhi 62/1 after 6 overs: Arshdeep removes the danger man Shaw! He has been Punjab's go-to bowler in such situations and the slower one has managed to flummox Shaw. The left-armer rolled it slow and short, forcing Shaw to mistime the pull that is gobbled Gayle while running back at short-midwicket. Delhi 58/0 after 5 overs: Shami is taken for a stroll around Wankhede as Dhawan and Shaw have hit three boundaries to storm Delhi past 50. A dream start here for Delhi as it has managed to pace the start in stellar fashion.
Delhi 43/0 after 4 overs: Exquisite from Shaw! Richardson began by beating Shaw's bat with pace but the youngster had a telling response up his sleeve. Shaw swivelled around with poise to pull Richardson to the long-leg fence for four. Shaw finishes the over on a high as a full, delivery is rocketed over long-off for a gorgeous six. This is some start for Shaw and Delhi.

Delhi 31/0 after 3 overs: The boundaries are flowing. Shaw goes downtown as a tossed-up delivery from Saxena is taken apart for four. Jalaj makes use of a couple of variations with his wrist to keep Shaw quiet before Dhawan snorted the final ball of the over to the deep mid-wicket fence for another boundary.

Delhi 21/0 after 2 overs: Shami begins with a yorker to Dhawan who manages to keep the probing delivery out of danger. Shami then squares up Shaw with a beautiful nip-backer but is unfortunate that it has run down to the third-man boundary. However, Shaw gets back into his groove with a cracking hit over long-on for six!

Delhi 10/0 after 1 over: Arshdeep gets off to a get good start by inducing a false stroke off Shaw straightaway. Arshdeep fends it short and Shaw went for a pull that wasn't entirely convincing. He gets away with the streaky shot as the fielder at square leg is a lot finer than usual. Arshdeep then misses his mark as a loose short ball to Dhawan is pulled down to the fine-leg boundary.
We are back for the chase! Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw walk out to the middle as the Punjab Kings fielders take their positions. Arshdeep Singh up with the new ball for the Kings.

Rishabh Pant has possibly got his plans wrong with his bowlers once again. The Punjab openers were off to a flier even as Delhi opted to operate without their pace spearheads Kagiso Rabada and Avesh Khan at the start. While Mayank Agarwal blunted the bowlers from the onset, KL Rahul went about his latest 'careful' approach to set the ball rolling. Mayank's quick-fire 69 set the stage for Punjab to go big and the skipper soon entered the party with his 23rd IPL fifty. Rahul's departure was followed by the dismissals of Chris Gayle and Nicholas Pooran soon after. However, the final flourish once again came from the blades of Deepak Hooda and Shahrukh Khan who treated the international prowess of Kagiso Rabada and Chris Woakes with absolute disdain.
Punjab 195/4 after 20 overs: Shahrukh Khan with the final blitz! Woakes is taken to the cleaners as SRK. He stomped the first ball of the over to the deep square leg fence in a jiffy. A stroke of luck followed as a thick outside edge off the full ball trickled down to the third-man boundary. That wasn't all as a shorter ball from Woakes was walloped way into the stands over long-on. Shahrukh and Hooda have done justice to their roles even as Punjab missed the 200-run mark by five runs. Delhi has its task cut as another big-chase will follow at the Wankhede.

Punjab 179/4 after 19 overs: Fine comeback for Rabada as he packs Pooran. A low full-toss outside off is met with a strong shot that carried straight to deep point. Rabada was however, peppered for a smoking six over long-off by Hooda earlier in the over. Shahrukh Khan comes into join him for the final over as 200 seems a little below their radar. Punjab 170/3 after 18 overs: Pooran spanks Rabada to the mid-wicket fence for a four but the Proteas paceman has managed to keep it tight through the over. Rabada has taken a pounding on this batting belter and that has certainly made skipper Pant's job tough tonight.
Punjab 162/3 after 17 overs: Woakes to Gayle. OUT! The slower-one does the trick as Gayle slices it straight up in the air. Woakes got off to a poor start as he let Gayle free his arms for a six after conceding a free-hit. A deceptive slower-one then forces Gayle to attempt a wry heave that jumps up straight to the sub-fielder Patel at cover which lets us know that Prithvi Shaw is off the field . Meanwhile, Nicholas Pooran has managed to sneak in a single to get off the mark after two ducks in the first two matches. Chris Gayle c sub (RV Patel) b Woakes 11 (9b 0x4 1x6)

Punjab 150/2 after 16 overs: Rabada to Rahul. OUT! Rahul holes out to deep-midwicket, one short of completing 5000 T20 runs! New man Hooda comes into fill the void with as much audacity as his skipper as he hooks Rabada over third-man for a six first ball! Punjab has now crossed 150 with four overs to spare. 200 very well in the radar after the openers' mauling. KL Rahul c Stoinis b Rabada 61 (51b 7x4 2x6)

Punjab 140/1 after 15 overs: The misery piles on for the Capitals as Rahul is dropped at extra-cover by Woakes off the first ball. A regulation chance goes missing. Rahul makes Avesh Khan pay soon after with a stunning hit over the extra-cover boundary for a six! Avesh continues to bowl against the field as Rahul slices a wide, full delivery past the short-third fielder for another boundary.
Punjab 128/1 after 14 overs: A weird run-up from the 'scientist' Ashwin forces Rahul and Gayle to patiently exchange strike with singles. The teams enter into the timeout not before the birthday boy, KL Rahul marched onto yet another fifty.

Punjab 124/1 after 13 overs: Meriwala to Mayank. OUT! High into the night sky but Shikhar Dhawan makes no mistake in pouching that one. Full and wide outside off and it was there to be hit but Mayank attempted a slice over point that minimal power on it. The ball lobbed up with no distance on it and Meriwala finally has something to rejoice. Meriwala keeps it tight throughout the over as the Universe Boss, Chris Gayle joins KL Rahul. Punjab 120/0 after 12 overs: A fine over from Avesh as Agarwal and Rahul settle for the singles - nearly coming off every delivery. Rahul survives after Prithvi Shaw's brilliant effort is not enough to stop a ballistic heave. Apparently, it flew to Shaw on the full and would go down as a dropped chance.
Punjab 114/0 after 11 overs: Mayank goes bonkers!! Rabada has been stifled with three massive sixes in a 20-run over. The full-delivery first-up is pummeled over long-off before two loose short deliveries are hooked far into the stands behind backward square leg.
Rabada is back on, replacing Ashwin.
Punjab 94/0 after 10 overs: Avesh is on the money from ball one. Decent pace and tailing in sharply to do just enough to beat Mayank's outside edge. Agarwal, however, hooks Avesh's slower one to bring up a 25-ball fifty! What an innings has this been, leaving KL Rahul way behind in the attack.

Punjab 87/0 after 9 overs: Mayank on the prowl! Ashwin is sent down the ground first ball for a gigantic six. Frustrating for the offie as a misfield by Meriwala at short-third provides another freebie for Mayank who moves to 46.
Punjab 74/0 after 8 overs: Rahul gets into the onslaught! Lalit's short delivery is carefully stomped towards the deep mid-wicket fence before a delectable cut leaves Rabada glues to his mark at point.

Punjab 63/0 after 7 overs: A brilliant over from Ashwin forces Agarwal and Rahul to stick to the singles. Ashwin has kept the stump-to-stump line in a rare over without a boundary.
Punjab 59/0 after 6 overs: Rabada sets off on a wrong note as a wide delivery outside the off-stump is slashed past point by Rahul. He sends in another delivery off-line to Rahul's thighs that glides down the leg-side to the boundary. This a firm start for Punjab despite Rahul and Agarwal going about things in stark contrast. Rahul has found it tough to rotate strike freely as he finds himself on 23 (24) while Agarwal has pounced on any loose delivery while racing to 30 off just 13 balls!

Punjab 50/0 after 5 overs: Ashwin gets off to a good start by keeping Rahul in check. The offie gets it wrong off the fifth ball as a short, loose delivery is pulled to the square leg boundary with ease by the Punjab skipper.

Punjab 43/0 after 4 overs: Some respite for Meriwala in his second over, even as Agarwal found the square leg fence once again. Just eight runs conceded by the left-armer before beating the outside edge off Rahul with a beautiful away-seaming delivery.
Punjab 35/0 after 3 overs: Boundaries coming thick and fast. Woakes lost his line and length as he continued to pump in the shorter stuff down the leg-side to Agarwal who accepted the gift with open arms and sent them down the fine-leg boundary.
Punjab 25/0 after 2 overs: A nervy start for Meriwala as a wide delivery outside the off-stump is creamed by KL Rahul on the front for four. An agonising couple of deliveries follow as Rahul is dropped by Steve Smith at point. Meriwala does well to find the leading edge that forces Smith to stretch high but he fails to hold onto it. Lukman's first over in the IPL couldn't get any worse as he gave away another boundary off a no-ball, followed by a cracking six and boundary by Mayank Agarwal.

Punjab 5/0 after 1 over: Woakes gets some fine shape with the ball at the start. Rahul is forced to defend on the front for the first three balls before Woakes sent in the boundary ball, casually flicked by Rahul to the deep mid-wicket boundary.

6:50PM: We have news! Steve Smith and Lukman Meriwala have been handed their caps in the Delhi Capitals huddle. Some movement in the Punjab camp as well. Jalaj Saxena has received his maiden cap as well.
Big day for three stars coming in from paths in their cricketing journey tonight. Steve Smith who went out-of-favour at his former side Rajasthan Royals and began the season on the bench will have a shot at redemption tonight. And so will Jalaj Saxena - the domestic giant - have a chance to impress one and all at the big stage. Despite racking up the runs and wickets in domestic cricket, the big opportunities have hardly come his way. Lukman Meriwala comes into the tournament after a sizzling Syed Mushtaq Ali Tournament where he was among the top-wicket takers with his slew of variations doing the damage.

The South African pace combination of Kagiso Rabada and Anrich Nortje getting their act together for Delhi Capitals was one of the highlights of the Indian Premier League 2020. The Capitals’ wait to see the duo in action for the first time this season will be over against Punjab Kings on Sunday.
Rabada picked up two wickets in his maiden outing in 2021 against Rajasthan Royals. Nortje - after serving an extended isolation for 10 nights thanks to a false positive test report for COVID-19 - will be hungry for wickets.
The duo couldn’t have asked for a better occasion to spew venom against an attack that looked out of sorts against Chennai Super Kings on Friday. It will be interesting to see if K.L. Rahul’s boys can lift themselves up after being tormented by Deepak Chahar’s swing.

Chris Woakes is likely to keep his berth owing to impressive performances in the first two games. Nortje is set to replace Tom Curran.
Kings opener Mayank Agarwal, who had smashed a hundred in the against the Capitals in the last edition, will be keen on repeating the heroics. It was Agarwal’s ton that had set the tournament ablaze with a Super Over deciding the game.
