WHAT THEY SAID
Quinton de Kock: "It was a matter of just playing what's in front of you, reacting to it. It was a chaseable score. You want a decent start in the PowerPlay. We didn't want to get too ahead in the chase. Was important to keep wickets in hand."
KL Rahul: "I think we were brilliant. PowerPlay is something we need to go back and work on. I wanted the team to assess the pitch as a captain. They did it brilliantly. We just like knowing how much to chase. We do have to play good cricket. Dew factor does pay on the minds of the teams. That is why they choose to bowl first. You don't know what to expect as last day there was no dew. Later, if the pitch slows down teams may think differently then. He (Badoni) has held his nerve whenever he goes in to bat. This is great learning for him and he needs to keep working hard and remain humble."
Rishabh Pant: "The dew was coming in heavily but we cannot complain. As a batting unit, we were 10-15 runs short. We gave our 100 per cent till the last ball. We didn't get any wickets in the PowerPlay."
RESULT: LUCKNOW SUPER GIANTS BEATS DELHI CAPITALS BY SIX WICKETS |
LUCKNOW SUPER GIANTS INNINGS
LSG 155/4 in 19.4 overs: Shardul needs to pull off a Kartik Tyagi here. More sawdust being applied near the landing area now. Delhi starts to believe. Hooda holes out to Axar near sweeper cover. Shardul aims for the tramline. Badoni leaves and Shardul has been warned. No wide called though. Badoni comes to Lucknow's rescue yet again. Drills one past two fielders to get a four. Out comes the celebratory fist pump as the side levels. Badoni has muscled a six through extra cover to take Lucknow home.
LSG 145/3 in 19 overs: 19 runs, 12 balls is how the equation stands right now. Mustafizur takes the pace off and Krunal has tonked this out of the ground. Quality fielding on display from Warner again saves crucial runs and allows Delhi some breathing space.
LSG 131/3 in 18 overs: Krunal goes for the grandiose heave but is beaten. Shardul is looking to bowl wide yorkers to give the batters less to work with. Some sawdust being sprayed onto the landing area now. Krunal gets a couple of runs off a mishit. LSG is starting to feel the heat now.
LSG 126/3 in 17 overs: Mustafizur continues to vary his pace and length to confuse the two new batters at the crease. Only four runs come off the over.
LSG 122/3 in 16 overs: This has been a day to forget for Nortje. Another ball above the waist and it is a no ball. That can only mean, that will be it from Nortje for the night. Somebody else will have to bowl the free hit delivery and complete the over. Kuldeep has taken the responsibility. Only a single off the free hit. A slot ball next and de Kock has put that away towards the sight screen for four. He follows that up with another. Kuldeep has the last laugh! Looped up legbreak and de Kock, looking to target the midwicket region, gets a top edge to Sarfaraz at short third. The South African has been dismissed for a well-made 80 off 52.
LSG 111/2 in 15 overs: Shardul starts with a cutter. He is known to be very effective at the death. However, de Kock couldn't care less for the stats. de Kock unleashes the reverse scoop and it will run down to the boundary.
LSG 104/2 in 14 overs: de Kock has ended up guiding a menacing full toss for a six even as he tried to evade. The next ball has been called a free hit but Nortje manages to keep it down to a single. Pant is grimacing in pain as he is hit awkwardly on the thumb off a Warner throw. Umpire Rod Tucker signals the strategic timeout as Pant continues to receive medical attention. 100's up.
LSG 90/2 in 13 overs: Lalit joins the fun! After two dots, Lalit pushes one along the line and Lewis top-edges this high into the night sky. Kuldeep has all the time to compose himself underneath.
LSG 85/1 in 12 overs: de Kock goes for the inside out shot through cover to bring up his fifty off just 36 balls.
LSG 79/1 in 11 overs: Lalit concedes two singles of the first two balls. After a brief consultation with Warner, Pant decides to go upstairs after an LBW appeal is turned down. Turns out this would have gone down leg. DC has now lost both its reviews.
LSG 74/1 in 10 overs: DC finally gets the breakthrough. Kuldeep strikes! Rahul shimmies down looking to pump one down the ground. However, he miscues it straight to Prithvi at long-off. Can Delhi initiate a change in momentum hereon? Pant has finally found his voice back behind the sticks.
LSG 70/0 in 9 overs: de Kock finally gets a boundary off a reverse sweep through backward point.
LSG 62/0 in 8 overs: Kuldeep's first ball flies out of the ground for a six. There is a player review for LBW. J Madangopal doesn't need the UltraEdge to convince himself the ball makes contact with de Kock's gloves as he goes for a sweep. Pant is getting desperate for a wicket.
LSG 51/0 in 7 overs: It is Axar's turn to bowl. The fifty partnership comes up off 42 balls as de Kock gets a single, tucking one towards square leg.
LSG 48/0 in 6 overs: Mustafizur to see out the PowerPlay. The Bangladesh pacer's slower one strays down leg. Wide. Three off the over. A tap on the ump's watch means the strategic timeout has been called for.
LSG 45/0 in 5 overs: Nortje has been greeted with three consecutive boundaries. Not the way he would have wanted his season to start. The first one angles away from the left-handed batter, giving de Kock all the width to power this away through the offside. The next two deliveries are pumped straight down the ground past the pacer. Nortje digs one short after a dot and de Kock has pulled this away into the stands with absolute disdain.
LSG 26/0 in 4 overs: de Kock does well to judge the elevation and loft a pull over Kuldeep at midwicket. Woah! A rare miscue from de Kock but it lands safely wide of mid-on.
LSG 15/0 in 3 overs: Rahul picks up the first boundary of the innings with a leg glance off a delivery angled into the pads. A superb stop at mid-on by Warner sees de Kock having to settle for just one run.
LSG 8/0 in 2 overs: Lalit into the attack. Shardul lets one burst through his fingers to allow the batters to pick up a quick single.
LSG 5/0 in 1 over: Rahul is off with a nudge towards deep backward point. de Kock starts off with a single towards third man. A wide down leg sees Mustafizur reload after bowling the last ball of the over.
We're back for the chase! Rahul and de Kock to open. Mustafizur to bowl the first.

DELHI CAPITALS INNINGS
DC 149/3 in 20 overs: Holder does a good job, mixing up his deliveries, to keep it down to only four singles off the first four balls in the last over. Another Holder bouncer has been called a wide. Rahul and the bowler are understandably unhappy. Sarfaraz has been hit on the helmet but Patrick Farhart doesn't come on for the mandatory concussion test as Pant was on strike to face the last ball. A single to finish things off.
DC 142/3 in 19 overs: Pant employs a helicopteresque shot to dispatch a full toss from Avesh to the boundary.
DC 136/3 in 18 overs: The one-handed shot from Pant takes the bottom edge but lands in no man's land. Holder is trying to bowl wide yorkers to Pant, a type of delivery which has troubled the wicketkeeper-batter in the past.
DC 130/3 in 17 overs: Avesh, held back after bowling just one over, has been reintroduced. Sarfaraz has plinked the first ball towards the third man area. The fifty partnership comes off 35 balls as Sarfaraz finds the fence again.
DC 117/3 in 16 overs: Delhi enters triple figures with a Pant jab towards midwicket for a run. Pant puts the pressure right back on Tye with a four towards long-off and then with the straightest of sixes down the ground. Tye would have to rebowl the fourth as he strays high and wide off the off stump. A massive six to end the over as Pant goes downtown again.
DC 99/3 in 15 overs: Pant breaks the shackles with a four towards extra cover. He has scored only 12 off 20 thus far.
DC 90/3 in 14 overs: Sarfaraz, after playing the first ball right back to Tye, is beaten off the next bouncer. "Stoinis is undergoing quarantine in the hotel," LSG bowling coach Andy Bichel, meanwhile, informs. LSG will be left to rue a missed run out opportunity as Pant makes it back while Tye mistakingly dislodges the bails with his hands.
DC 87/3 in 13 overs: Sarfaraz and Pant continue to keep the scoreboard ticking with singles and the occasional double. Time for the strategic timeout.
DC 80/3 in 12 overs: How often do you see a maiden in the IPL? Gowtham has just bowled one. Pant and Sarfaraz, both experimental 360-degree batters, will look to avoid taking any undue risks now.
DC 80/3 in 11 overs: The dot ball pressure gets the better of Powell. Looking to go for the big shot, he gets down on one knee but Bishnoi knew better. The googly has rattled the stumps. Sarfaraz joins his skipper and Bishnoi welcomes him with yet another wrong'un. Sarfaraz reverse sweeps the last ball to third man for four.
DC 73/2 in 10 overs: Time for some offspin again. Only three singles come from that over as the DC batters look to bide some time in the middle.
DC 70/2 in 9 overs: That's the big fish! Warner's struggle comes to an end as Bishnoi removes the DC opener. Badoni takes a simple catch at short third. Pant joins Powell at the crease after the strategic timeout.
DC 68/1 in 8 overs: Prithvi welcomes Gowtham back with a cracking 87m six over long off. The second ball is a four, worked through deep extra cover. Prithvi walks. Rocks back to attempt a cut through the point region but he has nicked it to the 'keeper. He didn't even wait for the umpire to adjudge him out.
DC 57/0 in 7 overs: Krunal comes into the attack. Prithvi picks a single first ball. Krunal to Warner, 1 run. Prithvi reaches 50 with a couple, off 30 balls. 5 off the over.
DC 52/0 in 6 overs: Tye replaces Avesh. Prithvi collects a couple off the second ball. He goes on to play a sumptuous shot over backward point for four. Takes a single next ball. Dot to end.
DC 45/0 in 5 overs: Bishnoi into the attack. Slip in place for Prithvi. Bishnoi to Prithvi, two dot balls. It's business as usual for Prithvi as he flays a cut off the third ball for four. Single off the penultimate ball. Dot to finish.
DC 40/0 in 4 overs: Here's Avesh. Prithvi on strike. Bowls a gem first up, comes in slightly after pitching and beats Prithvi 's outside edge. Next ball, Prithvi absolutely drills a drive through sweeper cover for four. Makes it two fours in as many balls with a fierce cut off the third. A hat-trick of fours as Prithvi carves one to the third man fence. Picks a single next ball. Dot to finish. 13 off it.
DC 27/0 in 3 overs: Warner decides to take the aerial route. However, there isn't much of a connection there and it lands safely near the cover region. Prithvi dispatches Holder for a four and six next in absolute disdain. Holder hits the deck hard but the slower bouncer has been called a wide. The West Indies all-rounder isn't too happy with the umpire's decision. There is finally a hint of some swing.
DC 13/0 in 2 overs: Spin has been introduced early and it is Gowtham, who will be sharing the new ball with Holder. Prithvi finally gets the boundary he was looking for for a while now off a ball which dips right in the slot. Another four, Prithvi slices and the ball balloons over Holder's head at slip.
DC 4/0 in 1 over: Prithvi gets off the mark with three runs off the very first ball. Tye saves a run with a sliding effort. Warner registers his first run in IPL 2022 with a poke toward short fine. The last ball nearly carries to the fielder stationed at midwicket.
Warner and Prithvi to open the batting for Delhi. Holder has the new ball in hand.

LSG vs DC PITCH REPORT
"The dimensions on the offside are in the range of the 60s, while on the legside it is around the 70m mark. There is a quite a bit of even grass. The average score here is 170. There is enough turn on offer to beat the batters' outside edge. The spinners would definitely look to pitch on the stumps or around the off-stump area. Mostly they would look to bowl straight. The teams would look to bat first. 175-180 should be a good score. 170 is par. This is a good pitch," reckons Graeme Swann.

LSG vs DC MATCH PREVIEW
Two days after escaping to victory against Sunrisers Hyderabad, Lucknow Super Giants eyes a third straight victory without losing sight of the steely resolve of the Delhi Capitals on Thursday.
Playing a second successive match at the D. Y. Patil Stadium, Super Giants are expected to hold a clear edge over the Capitals that won in Wankhede Stadium but lost at Pune’s MCA Stadium.

The K. L. Rahul-led Super Giants have ticked most boxes in the batting department with all the top-order batters, except Manish Pandey, scoring at least a half-century. Young Aayush Badoni has been a revelation with his free-flowing strokeplay.
However, among the bowlers, the team awaits Ravi Bishnoi to strike. Wicketless in two matches and finding just two wickets for 88 runs is not what the team expects from the leg-spinner, who bowls more googlies and top spinners than the conventional leg-spin.

The Capitals' top-order batters look most vulnerable, and the middle-order unreliable. The victory over Mumbai Indians was the result of some late charge from unlikely heroes Lalit Yadav and Axar Patel. In the next encounter, the collective batting failure saw the Capitals fall short by 14 runs chasing Gujarat Titans’ 171.
Unless the Capitals play to their potential, the Super Giants should be expected to come out stronger.
