Peter Nevill is helped off the field in Adelaide during Big Bash.

Australia wicketkeeper Peter Nevill was taken to hospital with a suspected fractured jaw after being hit by a flying bat in Melbourne Renegades' Big Bash League win over Adelaide Strikers.

Brad Hodge swung big at a Thisara Perera delivery, but lost control of his bat, which flung into the air and struck Nevill on the cheek in a freak accident. Nevill received treatment on the field at Adelaide Oval and appeared to have a cut under his left eye.

The BBL's Twitter account later confirmed that the 31-year-old had been taken to hospital for further assessment, with initial suggestions that he has fractured his jaw.

Renegades' victory kept its slim hopes of reaching the BBL semifinal alive, while the Stikers can no longer make the top four.
