Madhya Pradesh's Avesh Khan celebrates as Hyderabad batsman K. Sumanth is caught in the slip cordon by Shubham Sharma. Avesh returned with figures of 7/24 as Hyderabad was bowled out for 124.

A dream spell of bowling by Madhya Pradesh's Avesh Khan coupled with an unbroken century stand for the second wicket between Ajay Rohera and Rajat Patidar saw the home team finish off a highly satisfying first day at 168 for one in a Ranji Trophy Group B contest at the Holkar Stadium on Friday.

Hyderabad, put into bat, was clearly done by the pace trio of Avesh, Kuldeep Sen and Gourav Yadav and later on by Venkatesh Iyer.

But, it was obvious that the morning session clearly belonged to 21-year-old Avesh who pitched the ball up, swung it late and more importantly gave little freedom for the batsmen to settle down with his accuracy.

The former India under-19 pacer began the slide dismissing in-form opener Tanmay Agarwal and a hesitant No. 3 Tanay Thyagarajan with yorkers. Rohit Rayudu’s indifferent form continued as he too perished playing away from his body off Avesh.

Then, the pace bowler struck another telling blow – the ever-dependable B Sandeep forced to nick one on off-stump straight to wicketkeeper and captain Naman Ojha.

Avesh completed a remarkable haul of seven wickets with his first spell reading a stunning 10-5-19-6.

At the other end, Gourav bowled one superb over to Hyderabad captain Akshath Reddy and had the misfortune of cleaning him up of a no-ball but had revenge in his next over with another beauty.

The only batman who showed courage and conviction was No. 7 Himalay Agarwal who even essayed some lusty blows – including a six each off Gourav and Venkatesh.
