IND 148/3 (19 overs): Fatima Sana comes in for the penultimate over. Will this duo finish the game in this over? Jemimah wants to as she sweeps square for FOUR. This duo is not in a rush as they go about this chase in a sensible manner. Fatima allows India runs on a platter going short as Jemimah seals the game with two back-to-back boundaries. INDIA WIN! A fifty for Jemimah Rodrigues in a famous win.
Should Pakistan have saved Nida Dar for later?
IND 131/3 (18 overs): Aiman Anwer comes in and given that she’s gone for runs, one can safely expect this one to go the same way. There you go. Three boundaries all coming from Richa Ghosh. FOUR, FOUR, FOUR. 12 of the required runs handled. Brings the ask to 14 runs needed from 12 balls.
IND 122/3 (17 overs): Nida Dar comes out for her last over of the day. The scoreboard pressure is there and Richa Ghosh sets out to ease it with a boundary. FOUR. Full delivery sent to short third, beats a fielder too! Nice work from the youngster. Another boundary comes off this over but it comes due to an abysmal misfield. Rodrigues slogs square and Ayesha Naseem and Sidra Ameen make an absolute mess of it as it goes through Ameen’s legs. FOUR. Nida Dar has a lot to complain about today. 13 runs come off this over.
IND 109/3 (16 overs): Sadia returns for her final over. Goes very wide and beats Richa on the first ball. How was this not given a wide? Nasser Hussain on comms is also surprised! Richa compensates by sending the ball to the fence on the next ball. Slightly short this one and it’s sent to square leg. FOUR. No protection for her there. Hold on Richa might have to make the long walk back. LBW appeal. Lauren Agenbag has raised the finger. It goes to the tv umpire. Let’s see. There’s a spike as the ball passes her gloves. Third decision from Lauren Agenbag that has been overturned. Richa lives. The Indian dugout is vindicated.
IND 103/3 (15 overs): Fatima Sana in for her third. Two deliveries go quiet for India and Jemimah gives herself space by moving towards the offside and flicking the ball to the boundary. FOUR. 100 Up for India. Smart batting given that she knew the fielders were moved. Created space and sent it flying to short fine leg. Richa tries to go big but can’t manage it and is very frustrated.
Nashra has not been hit for a boundary. She will rejoice with a WICKET as Harman holes out to her Pakistan counterpart.
IND 95/3 (14 overs): Nashra returns for her last over and will hope to break this partnership. There’s activity on the first ball. A stumping appeal happens and is sent to the third umpire. Replays show no ball contact and her foot is grounded. No harm done. Didn’t have a lot going for it that appeal but what’s the harm in trying! Nashra has not been hit for a boundary. She will rejoice with a WICKET as Harman holes out to her Pakistan counterpart. She gets impatient and tries to sweep and ends up throwing up a big edge to short third. Bismah makes no mistake. IND 92/2 (13 overs): Nida Dar returns. She bowled an extra ball in her previous over. How does one make up? A big conversation will likely ensue about the same but the over first. Jemimah now goes bang-bang as she dispatches a fuller delivery through two fielders for FOUR. Nida comes back keeping it full and on line to try and draw out an error or at the very least keep these betters rooted in the crease.
IND 85/2 (12 overs): Nashra comes on again. Seven runs come off it as the Indian pair looks to pace their innings safely. India cruising at the moment. Where are the breakthroughs for Pakistan?
IND 78/2 (11 overs): Fatima Sana returns. Jemimah begins with a single. Harmanpreet has had enough of the safe game and thumps one over cow corner. What a quintessential Harman shot this. FOUR. Harman ends the over in the same fashion. Swept fine for FOUR. 11 runs come off the over.
A catch for the ages from Sidra Amin to dismiss Shafali Verma. One for the highlight reel.
IND 67/2 (10 overs): Nashra returns for her second. Shafali goes aerial right at the start but she finds Sidra Ameen at the ropes. OUT. A crucial 33-run knock from the 19-year-old comes to an end. A terrific effort from Sidra Ameen. Boundary checks are done and the catch is clean. Nice two-handed catch there as she leapt up to get a good hold of that. Not easy these. That brings Harmanpreet to the crease. Umpires have decided to take drinks. The over is not over and we might have another wicket here. A stumping appeal for Jemimah. Jemimah starts to walk but umpire sends it upstairs. Replays show Jemimah is within the crease when the keeper knocks the bails off. SAFE. Just the two runs and a wicket from the over. IND 65/1 (9 overs): Aiman Anwar is back for her second. Bismah has scattered her fielders now. A nice cut from Jemimah races away to the boundary for FOUR. Nine runs come off the over for India.
IND 56/1 (8 overs): Nashra comes in for her first over. Just the three runs off this over as Jemimah and Shafali feel her out. There was a misfield in this over too which gifted India a single. How about that!
IND 53/1 (7 overs): Dar returns. She has consistently pitched it up and tries to go full and outside off to draw something out of the batters, Shafali specifically, but she ends with a neat over, giving away six runs. Hold up. Make that 10 runs as this is a seven-ball over for some reason. What’s happened here?

IND 43/1 (6 overs): Sadia Iqbal returns for the last over of the PowerPlay. And Yastika falls at last. She comes down to try and drive this delivery from Sadia but ends up holing out to Fatima Sana at cover. 10 runs and a wicket from this over from Sadia. IND 33/0 (5 overs): Bismah introduces Nida Dar. She’s trying everything in this PowerPlay. There are two deep fielders in place for Yastika. Keeps the deliveries full, looking to recreate the 2-wickets she took against India in the Asia Cup. No wickets, but Shafali gets FOUR runs as she beats the sliding fielder by the boundary line to keep the scoreboard going. Six runs off the over.
IND 27/0 (4 overs): Sadia Iqbal returns. Can she break this partnership? Big appeal on the fourth ball of the over as Shafali seems to have copped one on the pads. Is it going down leg? We assume that’s what the umpire thought as she took her time to raise her hand. Shafali reviews. And as suspected, we see the ball’s trajectory going wide off the leg stump. Good review. Second decision by Lauren Agenbag which has been overturned this evening. Ah. Shafali rubs salt in Pakistan’s wounds by following that foiled appeal with a four - a thick edge, slips through the slip region and runs away for FOUR. Six runs come off the over.
IND 21/0 (3 overs): Bismah removes Fatima Sana for the time being and brings in Aiman Anwar. Wonder what triggered this givent that Fatima Sana has been among the wickets more. She is a tad slower too. Another over, another misfield from Pakistan as short third allows Shafali an extra run. 10 runs come off this over. Yastika finishes with a boundary. FOUR runs as the ball goes racing down fine leg. Not the impact Bismah Maroof would have wanted. Aiman has largely concentrated on bowling on the legside and well, it didn’t quite go to plan with the Indians clipping their way through the over.

IND 11/0 (2 overs): Sadia Iqbal comes in for the second. Pakistan resorts to early spin too and it almost pays off with Yastika Bhatia going aerial without getting the distance. Ayesha Naseem is closest but doesn’t get to it on time or well. Three runs off the over.
IND 8/0 (1 over): Fatima Sana starts proceedings for Pakistan. She starts full with Yastika choosing to negotiate safely. Fatima follows it up with a very short second ball and Yastika has no qualms in sending this one racing to the boundary line. FOUR. A little misfield from Pakistan gives away a run but Fatima Sana spends the over trying to find her rhythm. India picks eight runs off the first.
Here comes the Indian chase. Yastika Bhatia and Shafali Verma take guard for India. Will India miss its chase queen, Smriti Mandhana? We’ll know in a bit.

PAKISTAN INNINGS HIGHLIGHTS
Bismah Maroof led from the front as she guided Pakistan to 149/4 in 20 overs.
PAK 149/4 (20 overs): Deepti will close out the innings. Another drop but this one helps the ball go for a SIX. Bismah then pierces the field with a nice slice past point for FOUR. Deepti ends with a dot ball but that’s after giving away 13 runs in the over. INDIA NEEDS 150 TO WIN. This is Pakistan’s highest T20I score against India and in T20 World Cups.
PAK 136/4 (19 overs): Penultimate over. Gayakwad given the responsibility. Gayakwad switches her lengths but stays largely full. Bismah looks to drive but she slices it almost between cover and point for FOUR. India gets a chance to remove the dangerous Ayesha Naseem but Radha Yadav DROPS a SITTER. Costly, costly. Radha had a long time to prepare for that after coming in from long off but it slips through her cupped hands and falls. Unfortunate for India, relief for Ayesha.
India has been giving a fielding penalty for not finishing overs on time, so one less fielder by the ropes. Can Pakistan capitalise?
PAK 127/4 (18 overs): Vastrakar returns and Bismah first off gets the fifty out of the way. FOUR down short third. This also brings up the fifty for the stand between her and Naseem. However, it looks like Bismah has taken a hit to her thumb. This will surely bring back some PTSD for Pakistan given she was ruled out of the 2020 edition with a thumb injury. Bismah seems okay. Gorgeous aerial shot over cover point follows. Nicely done. Bismah manages a couple of 2s, one of those almost became a boundary. The foil - Radha Yadav’s diving one-handed effort to stop the ball just before the boundary. 11 runs from the over.
PAK 116/4 (17 overs): Bismah is tuning her role to the needs of the game. Looks like she’s going to focus on giving Ayesha the strike. Gayakwad returns. Was it a mistake to not persist with spin and bring the seamers later? One to discuss after this innings gets done. The Renuka gamble backfired. This pair’s partnership is inching towards the fifty mark. Seven runs come off this over.
The gamble of bringing Renuka in did not pay off for Harmanpreet
PAK 109/4 (16 overs): Renuka returns. Sends in a loose-ish delivery. Looked very wide on off stump. Ayesha gets down on a knee and thumps it aerially over long off for a SIX. The first one of this innings. She had to manouvre a wide delivery to angle it straight for that six. This is what Ayesha Naseem can do! AND she repeats this again, lofting this down the ground, one bounce FOUR. Slightly sloppy from Renuka as she concedes two consecutive wides. Pressure on Renuka. 15 already from this over and Renuka concedes another wide. THREE WIDES in all. 18 runs come off this over finally, a big one for Pakistan. India is an over behind in the innings timer as well.
Last five overs. How much can the girls in green manage?
PAK 91/4 (15 overs): Yadav returns. Eight runs come off the over as Yadav toys with a few full tosses. Pakistan is running but just not finding the boundary as easily as it should.
PAK 83/4 (14 overs): Bismah takes a single. Harmanpreet Kaur copies the field setting she did for Nida for Ayesha as Vastrakar comes back. It doesn’t work this time though as she slams it aerially to run down mid off for FOUR. Plans change swiftly for India. Replay shows a nice wrist involvement in that shot too. Nicely done. Nine runs come off this over. Would have been 12 if Shafali Verma’s sliding effort at the boundary rope had not happened. Pakistan needs more of this.
PAK 74/4 (13 overs): Yadav returns and removes Sidra Ameen off the very first delivery. OUT. Ameen’s reverse sweep attempt throws the ball behind her, lofted up for Richa to catch and celebrate. Glove and back of the bat, with that last touch propping it upwards and making it easy for Richa to catch and send her back to the hut. Second wicket for Radha Yadav. Ayesha Naseem comes out.
PAK 68/3 (12 overs): Gayakwad returns. A very quiet over with three runs coming off it. Bismah has had enough and paddle sweeps to short fine leg for FOUR.
PAKISTAN HAS NOT FOUND THE BOUNDARY SINCE THE POWERPLAY
PAK 61/3 (11 overs): Shafali Verma into the attack. The U-19 World Cup-winning captain is attacking between the middle and off stump, varying her lengths. Pakistan is going about very cautiously. Pakistan is looking to maximise on the opportunities to run two but India has positioned its boundary fielders in ways to prevent that. Bismah scoops forward to make some space for herself as she runs two anyway. Three runs in this over. India will be very happy.
PAK 58/3 (10 overs): Vastrakar returns. Another wide ball from the seamer, this one goes flying high. Pakistan is happy to run the ones and twos. One can’t help but wonder what an Aliya Riaz or Ayesha Naseem would have done, if they had come in instead of Sidra Amin. Bismah is moving deeper into that anchor role and that’s slowed her down too. The Indian field placement is interesting. Very protective of the boundary rope and that triggers a bottleneck in the middle. But this Pakistan pair is running and running hard. Eight runs off that over. Much work to do.
PAK 50/3 (9 overs): Radha Yadav returns. Ebony Rainford-Brent on commentary explains how Deepti’s undoing today has been overpitching the ball. Bismah using the sweep shot has negated Deepti’s attacks to force a wicket and that’s made her expensive today. That said, India has punctuated the Pakistan innings regularly with wickets. The scoring rate has dropped as a result.
PAK 46/3 (8 overs): Pooja Vastrakar into the attack. Starts with a peach of a ball. It was a length ball inching towards off and it beat the batter completely. Good way to announce yourself in a contest this from Pooja. There’s a bit of extra bounce that Nida and Bismah are still trying to gauge. A caught behind appeal follows which umpire Lauren Agenbag brushes off. India reviews. Ultra Edge detects a spike when the ball goes past Nida Dar’s gloves. That’s OUT. PAK 42/2 (7 overs): Radha Yadav into the attack. Radha does what Deepti was trying for so long. Arm ball that goes away from the batter. Forces Muneeba to use her feet and come down to track in trying to gauge and create some pace for the ball but she ends up being stumped. OUT! That brings Nida Dar to the middle alongside Bismah. PAK 39/1 (6 overs): Two left handers. Naturally Deepti will continue. Dealing in ones and twos, the two Pakistan batters but Muneeba rounds off the powerplay with a FOUR! A lofted sweep that runs away to the boundary line.
PAK 31/1 (5 overs): Rajeshwari Gayakwad into the attack now. Bismah Maroof is leading the charge today as she sweeps to counter spin. She uses the sweep to steal two runs and follows it up with FOUR runs coming in the same fashion. Seven runs come off the over.
PAK 24/1 (4 overs): A nice drive from Bismah, but just a single. Strike rotation happening as Muneeba is also comfortable pecking away at those singles. She’s noticing the turn and that’s giving her the confidence to move so much at the crease. Bismah goes aerial but it lands ahead of the boundary rope, running away for FOUR anyway. That was a clean hit straight down. Deepti tries to tempt Bismah to try that again, trying to toss it up to her hoping for an error but Bismah has swept that for another FOUR. Looked a bit loose that ball but quite a pretty shot that, hit clean. Good over for Pakistan. They need more of these.
PAK 14/1 (3 overs): Renuka returns. The ball isn’t coming on as well and it’s troubling the Pakistan batters here. Renuka is switching it up between full and length deliveries trying to tempt the new batter with a slight angling towards the off-stump. Muneeba moves her feet to try and play with Renuka, going from legside to offside, but she unsteadily gets a shot over her shoulder, much like Javeria was doing in the last over. Comes off as a bit nervous from the opener especially when her stumps are lying exposed so much.

PAK 11/1 (2 overs): Deepti Sharma into the attack now. Muneeba goes square for a single and gets Javeria on strike. Javeria gets creative and scoops the ball over her shoulder to buy some time to run two. She follows it up with a nice reverse sweep for FOUR. Harmanpreet positions herself in short fine leg to prevent these scoops/sweeps from Javeria running away to the boundary and it works! OUT! A soft dismissal as Javeria tries to clip the ball over her shoulder once again. Into the safe hands of the Indian skipper the ball goes! Bismah Maroof into the attack. PAK 3/0 (1 over): Muneeba starts cautiously with a dot. She was beaten on pace in the second delivery with the delivery angling away from her but going to the keeper. She cuts Renuka in the third delivery and gets off the mark bringing Javeria on strike. There’s a lack of pace here and Javeria herself seems a bit hesitant to start, waiting for the ball to come on. She then clips it down fine leg for a quick couple of runs. We end with a dot in the first over, a quick drop and run which prompts Renuka to throw the ball to the stumps hitting Javeria instead. Everyone’s okay.

PITCH: This is a used pitch, having played host to the tournament opener a few days ago. It is a dry surface and batting won’t be as straightforward as these sides might like.
India heads in hoping to join the likes of Australia and England in getting their campaign off to a winning start. Pressure will be on Jemimah Rodrigues to perform as she has not been able to play an impactful knock since her comeback. The role of pace bowling all-rounder Pooja Vastrakar will also be critical to India’s chances in the tournament. Richa Ghosh is among the few players in the team with the X-factor and she would be relied upon heavily for big hitting in the death overs.

Searching for a long overdue ICC title, India will look to hit the straps in their Women’s T20 World Cup opener against arch-rivals Pakistan here on Sunday. An Indo-Pak contest always creates excitement but with India being a much superior side, the quality of cricket might not meet the high expectations.
Having said that, Pakistan had got the better of India their last meeting in the Asia Cup last year with the latter making too many experiments. In the last five years, the gulf between the two teams has widened with India challenging the supremacy of Australia and England on a consistent basis. Women’s cricket in Pakistan, on the other hand, has stagnated.
With the game scheduled a day ahead of the inaugural Women’s Premier League auction, there will be added motivation for the Indian players. For some, it could be a distraction.
India come into the World Cup having lost the recent tri-series final to South Africa, a match they should have won. They also lost the warm-up game to Australia before beating Bangladesh.
