Champions League highlights: Lyon stuns Man City to enter semis

Hello and welcome to Sportstar's Champions League quarterfinal highlights between Manchester City and Lyon at the Estadio da Luz, Lisbon.

 

FULL-TIME: MANCHESTER CITY 1-3 LYON

What an incredible result for Lyon as it reaches the Champions League semifinal for the second time in its history. The French team has been sensational on the counter attack and was absolutely tenacious at the back. City, on the other hand, struggled to get going and costly errors at the back has been its undoing as two goals from Moussa Dembele came off a big mistakes in the defence. Rudi Garcia's men will now face Bayern Munich for a place in the final.

90+5' MISS! De Bruyne curls the corner kick at the far post with Walker left with a free header. However, the full back makes a mess of it as he drags it wide, which pretty much sums up the night for City.

90+3' SAVE! City throws the kitchen sink at Lyon as Sterling wins a free kick on the edge of the box after Marcelo clips him. De Bruyne curls a fantastic free kick but Lopes is upto the task and palms it away for a corner.

90' De Bruyne tries to put Jesus through to the goal another clearance finds Dembele in acres of space down the left side. Garcia douses the fire as he draws a foul from the Frenchman. The fourth official announces five minutes of injury time.

88' GOAL LYON! That should be the game and Dembele is at it again. He beats Garcia outside the box and runs into space to set up another one-on-one with Ederson who makes a mess of the forward's tame attempt. Dembele latches the spill over and finishes with a simple tap-in. Guardiola is fuming in the dugout as he gulps down some water.

84' MISS! How did Sterling miss that! Jesus gets behind the Lyon defence and squares it off to an unmarked Sterling who has the goal at his mercy but blasts it over the crossbar. Guardiola is down on his knees. He sure cannot believe it.

81' City defence looks deflated by the second goal as Garcia concedes a corner which is cleared away. Guardiola takes Rodri to send in David Silva as a last measure.

79' GOAL LYON! The City defence is outsmarted again by a single ball over the top as Moussa Dembele escapes the off-side trap and is in one-on-one with the goalkeeper. The forward measures his chip perfectly and lifts it over Ederson into the net. City appeal for a foul on Rodri but VAR deems it a goal. What a brilliant twist to this game.

76' Sensational defending from Marcelo. The centre-back blocks two attempts from Jesus after the first attempt falls back for the striker inside the box.

73' The goal has fired up City as De Bruyne gets another shot away from distance. However, the high line defence could its undoing as Ederson is forced to come out of his box for a clearance as Ekambi chases a long ball.

69' CITY EQUALISES! Cancelo dinks the ball over the left-back for Sterling to reach the touchline, who finds space in the middle and lays it on the platter for De Bruyne who applies a clinical finish to pull City level. That should fire the English side.

68' City needs more dynamism in the final third and the introduction of Mahrez has done little to deter the dogged Lyon defence. De Bruyne bulldozes through the centre and pulls the trigger but is blocked by Denayer.

66' Jesus finally gets the better of Marcelo as he draws a foul from the centre back just outside the box. De Bruyne stands over free kick but bends it over the crossbar.

64' City is getting impatient with each passing moment. Walker is shown a yellow card for a stamp on Ekambi.

62' What a waste. De Bruyne spots Sterling at the far post and sends a pin-point cross. However, the English forward ducks down to get a headed clearance from one of the defenders, but Marcal manages to head it back into the play.

60' Shot! Marcelo's pressure over Jesus results in a free kick from outside 20 yards as De Bruyne stings Lopez's palms with a dipping strike.

58' Rodri is shown a yellow card after he hacks down Gumaraes. City has been inferior to Lyon in winning tackles in the middle and final third so far.

56' Cancelo dances down the left wing and wins a corner. City's desperation for a goal is evident as Guardiola takes off Fernandinho for Riyadh Mahrez.

54' Fernandinho is lucky to escape with a warning after he trips Cornet over the ball on the right wing. City needs more impetus to breach this resolute Lyon defence.

52' Jesus wins a free kick for City after Marcelo jumps over him trying to win a header. De Bruyne sends in a cross at the far post which is headed over the line by Denayer for a corner.

50' De Bruyne tries to turn away from Marcelo but loses altogether. Lyon breaks at speed and wins a free kick after Garcia brings down Depay outside the area.

48' City works the ball around the back as Cancelo tries to cut in from the left. However, Denayer is upto the task and kicks the ball out for a throw-in.

46' We are underway in the second half! No half-time changes from Guardiola or Garcia. Ekambi makes a darting run down the flanks and wins a corner.

HALF-TIME: MANCHESTER CITY 0-1 LYON

45+1' SAVE! A sumptuous cross from De Bruyne curls around the Lyon defence to reach Sterling at the near post. Lopes rushes off his line quickly to block the shot from point-blank.

44' City has finally found it way back into the game. De Bruyne wins a corner and takes it short. He dances down the right side and pulls the trigger which is blocked by Denayer.

42' Chance! Sterling turns Marcelo inside out on the right and cuts it back into the path of Jesus who takes the shot. Lopes is able to get palms to it but spills it over again before collecting the ball safely.

40' Guimaraes and De Bruyne are involved in a tussle on the right side as City midfielder demands for a hand ball inside the box but the referee is not interested.

37' Lyon's dominance of the midfield is telling with the trio of Aouar, Guimaraes and Caqueret harrying City. Lopes tries to find Auoar in the centre with a long ball which ends in nasty collision with Fernandinho.

34' Cancelo has been City's best player so far with his overlapping runs and lethal crossing. He needs more assistance from Jesus who has been kept quiet by Marcelo so far.

31' Save! Cancelo's low cross from the left is palmed away by Lopes as Gundogan latches on to the spill over and pulls the trigger from close range which is saved brilliantly by Lopes.

28' The City defence is enduring nervous moments as Fernandinho concedes a free kick in a dangerous area after brining down Aouar and goes into the referee's book.

24' GOAL LYON! A long ball from the keeper reaches Ekambi in one-on-one position with Garcia. The striker spots Cornet running behind unmarked and cuts it back. The striker applies a superb finish from a tight angle to put Lyon upfront.

23' Cancelo finds Sterling in a pocket of space on the left. The Englisman tries to pull it back for De Bruyne but Caqueret intercepts it.

21' Sterling is forced wide after he races down the left with Denayer on his tail. The Belgian pressurises Sterling to play it back.

19' Lyon gets a good spell of possession as Dubois squares a pass into the box for Ekambi but Laporte hacks it away to safety.

17' Rodri sends a low cross into the box but finds no takers. City needs to watch out for the spaces left on the wings as Lyon has often used the pace of Depay and Dubois.

15' City has been bossing the chances created and possession so far, but it needs to be wary of Lyon's counter attacking threat. De Bruyne is let go with a warning by the referee after he brings down Aour.

13' Dubois is shown a yellow card for petulant foul on Rodri. Lyon regains possession and overloads the right wing as Cancelo comes out trumps against Caqueret.

11' Lyon gets a shot on the goal from the corner after Marcal lets one fly after latching on to the clearance. Sterling is played into space by Cancelo once again, but the forward is unable to pull the trigger after being tackled by Marcelo.

9' De Bruyne fizzes a cross into the box for Sterling which is headed out by Denayer. Lyon counters through Cornet who races away on the left and wins a corner for Rudi Garcia's side.

7' City is ramping up the pressure but Lyon has been able to hold it off. De Bruyne tries to turn away from Marcelo on the right but the centre-back hauls him off the ball.

5' Almost an own goal! That was a close one from Walker. The English full-back fumbles a headed clearance off a cross which Ederson stretches to the left to collect.

3' CLOSE! A superb through ball from Cancelo finds Sterling running at the goal with little opposition. The winger lays it off for Jesus in the centre but Denayer comes up with a timely clearance. Ominous start from City.

1' And we are off! Man City builds from the back De Bruyne tries to find Jesus in space on the right but Dubois cuts off the pass.

The players emerge out of the tunnel. Pep Guardiola will hope for a result which will see him reach the Champions League semifinal for the eighth time in his managerial career.

 

• Landmark for City duo: Manchester City's Champions League top scorer Raheem Sterling is to set to make his 50th appearance in the competition, with stalwart David Silva on the verge of his 100th outing in all UEFA competitions. Sterling had recently reached 100 goals across all competitions for City and has enjoyed a stellar 2019-20 season scoring 31 goals across all competitions.
• Its interesting to see Guardiola start with Joao Cancelo ahead of defensively adept Benjamin Mendy at left back. The 19-year old Eric Garcia will make his second Champions League appearance after making his debut against Dinamo Zagreb in the group stages earlier in the season. Meanwhile, Lyon head coach Rudi Garcia has gone with an unchanged XI that lost the round of 16 second leg to Juventus.

Team News: Sergio Aguero is confirmed to miss the tie as the Argentinian is in Barcelona, recovering after a surgery to his knee meniscus. Meanwhile, Lyon forward Maxwel Cornet is doubtful for the quarterfinal.

Story so far: Manchester City reached the quarterfinal after beating 13-time champion Real Madrid 4-2 on aggregate in the round of 16. Lyon beat Juventus on away goals after losing the second leg 2-1 and aggregates tied on 2-2.
