Eddie Howe appointed Newcastle United manager

The 43-year old will return to football management after leaving AFC Bournemouth on mutual consent last year.

Newcastle United has appointed former Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe as its manager, as confirmed by the club on Friday.

"Newcastle United are delighted to confirm the appointment of Eddie Howe as the club's new head coach on a contract until summer 2024," the club wrote in an official statement.

He will take over from Graeme Jones, who took temporary charge after Steve Bruce left by mutual consent earlier this month, two weeks after the club was taken over by a consortium led by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund.

His first game in charge will only be after the international break when Newcastle hosts Brentford at home on November 20.

Eddie said, "It is a great honour to become head coach of a club with the stature and history of Newcastle United. It is a very proud day for me and my family." 

"This is a wonderful opportunity, but there is also a lot of work ahead of us and I am eager to get onto the training ground to start working with the players."

Following his appointment midway through the 2008-09 season, he kept a flailing Bournemouth side up in the fourth-tier League Two, avoiding relegation to non-league despite being docked 17 points amid crippling debts.

The miraculous escape was followed by three promotions in six years as Howe eventually led them to the top flight in 2015 when they won the Championship.

The club resonated "Eddie had a dream" as it spent half a decade in the Premier League and finished as high as ninth in the 2016-17 campaign.

"We have been incredibly impressed by Eddie through what has been a rigorous recruitment process," said Newcastle United co-owner, Amanda Staveley.

"As well as his obvious achievements with AFC Bournemouth, where he had a transformational impact, he is a passionate and dynamic coach who has clear ideas about taking this team and club forward. 

"He is a great fit for what we are trying to build here. We are delighted to welcome Eddie and his staff to St. James' Park and very much look forward to working together towards our collective ambitions," he added. 

Newcastle currently sits 19th in the league table with just five points in 11 games after a draw against seventh placed Brighton Hove Albion on Saturday. Howe was also in the stands during that game.
