Manchester United's Jesse Lingard scores their first goal against West Brom at Old Trafford, Manchester, on Saturday.

Jesse Lingard’s goal, his first in United colours, inspired his side to a 2-0 win over West Bromwich Albion on Saturday and left the Red Devils a point shy of the Premier League summit.

The hosts ended a 404-minute goal drought against CSKA Moscow in mid-week, but they were barren again until Lingard broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute at Old Trafford. The second goal for United was scored by Mata, who stroked home a penalty after Gareth McAuley had been sent off for bringing down Anthony Martial in the box.

Victory kept Louis van Gaal’s side in fourth place, but they are now just a point below joint-leaders Manchester City and Arsenal and third-place Leicester City, who won 2-1 at home to Watford. Jamie Vardy scored for the ninth league game running as Leicester sank Watford to continue their fine start to the season under manager Claudio Ranieri.

Nightmare continues

Marko Arnautovic scored the winner as Stoke handed Chelsea another defeat, their seventh of the season, and piled more pressure on their manager Jose Mourinho, who was suspended from the stadium for the match.

Stoke scored the only game of the match in the 52nd minute when Johnson, a former Chelsea player, got on the end of a Xherdan Shaqiri pass and squared for Jonathan Walters, who teed up Arnautovic to score an acrobatic goal.
