Midfielder Jeakson Singh made history on Monday as he scored India's first World Cup goal during the side's clash against Colombia at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Delhi.

In the 82nd minute, Jeakson towered over the Colombian defence to head in Sanjeev Stalin's corner and put the Indian side on level terms.

Sixteen-year-old Jeakson, who pays for Minerva Punjab, was proud of his feat but was left dejected as India succumbed to a 2-1 loss.

"It is obviously a great feeling to score for my country in a FIFA World Cup but it would have been sweeter had we won the match," he said after the match. "I felt on cloud nine when I scored the goal, however we tried our best but were unlucky. To me in fact it does not even matter as long as we score."

"We deserved a result, and we tried our very best to get it but in the process we learnt a huge lesson what international football is all about," he added.
