FIFA appoints 13 VARs for World Cup

FIFA has appointed 13 referees, who will act as the Video Assistant Referees (VAR) during the upcoming World Cup in Russia.

FIFA has appointed 13 referees, who will act as the Video Assistant Referees (VAR) during the upcoming World Cup in Russia.

The officials were chosen based on their experience of working as a video match officials in their respective confederation competitions. Among the 13 selected, nine referees come from the association of UEFA, three from the CONMEBOL region and one from AFC countries.

During a World Cup match, four officials from the 13 will be appointed as a VAR, AVAR1, AVAR2 and AVAR3.

In addition, some of the referees and assistant referees appointed for the World Cup will also act as Video Assistant Referees. These appointments will be made before the matches.
